Virginia Knob Creek?

Unread postby angelshare » Tue Jul 26, 2005 7:01 am

Straight from the rumor mill, a friend of my stepbrother who works for Beam says that VA ABC has purchased 20 barrels of Knob Creek to sell exclusively in VA. Linn , Gary, anybody heard of this? I know nothing about timeline or anything.

Dave your post is news to me, as I haven't heard a thing about such a bottling. Keep us informed.

I can't shed any light on that either Dave. If it makes the shelves and has unique markings I'll certainly do my part and buy several, if for no other reason than to show support for this kind of project!

Beam Saturday in VA

Unread postby angelshare » Sun Sep 25, 2005 11:23 am

Well, the rumor was true. My stepbrother Brian and his friend Bill stopped in yesterday with a bottle of the VA only Knob Creek in hand. Bill works for Beam and tells us that the VA only Knob Crek will be available in 20 stores statewide at the same price as the usual Knob Creek.

To celebrate our own VA Beam Saturday, we also broke out a bottle of bonded Beam bottled in 1972 at age 5 years. The sad truth - the bonded Beam was much better in our opinion than the relatively high priced, hand selected, older Knob Creek!

Oh, well, the VA KC was still pretty good! We all agreed that it had a distinctive flavor in the finish that stood out compared to the "regular" version. Bill called it "pepper." That's not QUITE it on my palate, but pretty close. Not better than KC regular, just different.

Beam Saturday was also a bit of a celebration for my stepbrother, Brian, too. He will begin work soon as a Diageo rep with products that will include Dickel and Bulleit, if I remember correctly. We were proud to pour him some Dickel 12 in congratulation!

I went to the liquor store today, and all the Knob Creek bottles on the shelf had little copper ovals on red white and blue ribbon hanging around their necks.

They stated that they were "Hand Selected for the Customers of Virginia"

Under that is a facsilme of Fred Noe's signature.

On the bottom left of the oval is "Barrel no. 820"

On the bottom right is "39-TX39"

On the second bottle I bought is "Barrel no. 828" and "39-TX47"

I hadn't noticed a barrel number on Dave & Tina's bottle. So I guess this is a single barrel Knob Creek?! I haven't tasted it yet, because I have to go to work in a few hours. Work really gets in the way of one's bourbonic enjoyment.

If my little Fuji will take a decent macro shot I'll post a pic of the copper oval tomorrow.

Isn't that the truth! I'll be interested in your impressions when you crack it open.

Ken,

I'll do my best to post some tasting notes on this thread sometime this weekend.

At the last Virginia chapter meeting of Bourbon Enthusiast we did post some initial impressions and a semi-blind comparison between three Knob Creek expressions and one older Jim Beam Bottled-In-Bond.

You can read about it here:

Ours is Barrel 827. Might be cool to compare the two at the next meeting!

My local ABC must be one of the privaleged 20!!! I just bought one! Before selecting I purused the tags--there were actually a few different barrel numbers to choose from. I chose Barrel #824, only because I knew if it was great I could get more of the same.

I did an informal tasting today--it's a whole lot better than I remember *ANY* Knob Creek.

ima drinking some now! Very Booker's like or Bookerish if you perfer. But with a much better finish.

Very deep mahogony-hued amber.

Soft mouthfeel and good hearty mouth-coating body. Perfect.

The nose is HUGE! Honey and Molassas sing a sweet soprano duet, with sweet charred oak in the tenor. The vanilla harmonizes as a deep baritone. This is unusual as vanilla is usually an alto in most bourbons.

Taste - The flavor lays thick upon the tongue. A tad more tannic than is the vatted Knob Creek. There is a certian 'slickness'. Sweet vanilla and candy tones swirl around the mouth in a "Hallelujah Chorus". Glorious!

Finish - Long; sweet, and uplifting! Angelic in timbre, with the late arrival of devils food cake, or bourbon brownies.

Overview - These special single barrel bottings of Knob Creek are nothing short of spectacular! ima gonna buy more!

PANTS AWAY BABY!

HUZZAH!

Ken, just drive your ass on over! $200 in gas just to buy $100 in bourbon.

It's the right thing to do!

Good points all, Linn! Been to Virginia many times (Arlene's brother used to live there) In fact we will be coming through there mid May (the various parts of the family are splitting up a 4 BR near Corolla NC for a week)

I'll check with you before I go whether there is somewhere along the route I should watch for this.

Only need the Bourbon, though. all your other suggestions are covered just fine, though I appreciate the thoughts.
