What's in your Scotch Bunker?

Unread postby Mike » Wed Oct 05, 2005 10:39 am

In mine, I have the following;

10 YO Laphroaig
12 YO Belvenie Double Wood
12 YO Glendronach
15 YO Macallan Fine Oak
Ardbeg Uigeadail
Aberlour a'bunadh
Johnny Walker Black

Of these my favorites are the Uigeadail and the a'bunadh. Very different whiskies, but both excellent. Next would come the Macallan Fine Oak which is very smooth, but a touch on the light side for a Scotch. I used to keep a larger bunker, but since I have cut back on all spirits and Scotch has gone up so much in cost, I haven't replaced the 16 YO Lagavulin, the 21 YO Balvenie, or the 18 YO Macallan that I used to keep on hand.

I like Lagavulin 16 YO a lot, but it has almost doubled in cost over the last couple of years and I am still pissed about that so I have not replenished my supply.............it is a friend's favorite so I get an occasional sip from him. He can't say no because I have supplied him with some great bourbons and Scotchs over the last few years.

If by "bunker" you mean unopened backup-bottles, I have these in reserve:

1 x Lagavulin 16yo (bought before the shortage and they actually put it on sale!)
2 x Talisker 10yo (a fave of mine--keep in stock at all times)
1 x Dalwhinnie 15yo
1 x Laphroaig 10yo
1 x Glenkinchie 10yo (I may not replace this one--for Lowlands I prefer Auchentoshan)
3 x Auchentoshan 10yo (my milder "desert island" malt)
1 x Balvenie Doublewood (good basic malt...keep in stock at all times, but not necessarily a favorite)

Highland Park 12
JW Green
Lagavulin 16 (2)
Lagavulin Distiller's Edition (1987)
Longmorn 15
Macallan 12

Talisker Distiller's Edition (1986) (2)

Next on the hit list is Ardbeg Uigeadail, just waiting for my next trip where I can get it cheaper than here.

Current favorite: Talisker 18. For Talisker fans, definitely worth searching out!

I'm a little thin on Scotch at the moment. I'm saving my $$ for all the new Bourbon releases coming out this fall :D

All I've got right now is:

Laphroaig 10yo cask strength
Caol Ila 25yo

These are both amazing. My consolation prize for living in Boston and having limited Bourbon options is that we are up to our eyeballs in Scotch. We have a lot of tastings, often with the Master Distiller.

I also agree that Talisker 18 is outstanding.
