Best "cheap" bourbon

Unread postby parshooter » Fri Oct 29, 2004 8:11 am

What, in your opinion, is the best bourbon for under $25 ? I just had some Eagle Rare 10 SB, and it was quite tasty. What are some of your favorites in this price range?

Regular Eagle Rare is, IMO, the greatest bargain in bourbon.
AAA 10 y.o. (three bottles waiting in the mailroom!)
Four Roses (if you can find it)
Old Granddad 100
Wild Turkey 101
Wild Turkey Russell's Reserve

Binny's doesn't seem to stock it, which means I can't get it, so it can't be that good.

In addition to most of those listed above, Evan Williams 1783 (ten year old); to my palate, very similar to EWSB at half the price.

As Virginians, we are also partial to the Fox, but here it just barely makes the $20 cutoff (as I recall) if it's on sale.

Fox correction

Sorry - misread the price - the Fox does easily come in under $25.

Yeah, Dave I did a double take too. $25 = a bargin bourbon? There are so many good to great bourbons at the $25/bottle price point that the word bargin just doesn't seem to apply.

To me anything that's in the neighborhood of $10 a bottle that tastes good is a bargin.

Yet when you look at all the excellent bourbon offerings in the $25 range it puts multi-hundred dollar a bottle single malt Scottish whiskies to shame!

Dave,

Thanks for including the EW 1783. I was able to try that in September for the first time, and was quite impressed. I had meant to include it when I posted earlier. :)

Elijah C. 12
Weller 12
Weller 7
Elmer T. Lee

I've lost track of the Van Winkle 10's as far as current retail pricing, in fact I wouldn't know where to find a bottle locally, but if in and around the 25.00 mark - I'd slide both of those in the list as well.

Pours I like for under $25 include:

  • Wild Turkey Russell's Reserve
  • Ezra Brooks Single Barrel (The old 15yo though, I have not had the new 12yo)
  • WL Weller 12yo
  • Old Forester 100
  • Old Rip Van Winkle 10 yo 107 proof
  • Evan Williams Single Barrel (in particular the latest 94')
  • Wathens (it was under $25 the last time I got it... Not sure anymore though)
  • Buffalo Trace
  • Eagle Rare Single Barrel 10yo
  • Eagle Rare 10yo 101 Proof

There are those who would say that Evan Williams 1783 is the best value in American whiskey and I can't say they are wrong.
