Rebel Yell Review

Unread postby bourbonv » Tue Aug 09, 2005 1:18 pm

I was looking at the fine review by Squire of Rebel Yell. Great review and I agree totally that it was a superior product 20 years ago. It was ruined in my opinion by United Distillers when they decided to take it world-wide. They removed the age statement and lowered the proof to 80 - to compete in the world market, so they say. It really took the flavor out of the product with the reduced proof and age.

This is, of course, one of the few bourbon selections that is available in Fla.. I have never considered it, primarily because so many other more fetching options were ,albeit harder thus more enthusiastically received, available. As well, the written good word was, at best, sparsely spread. I may, eventually, try it as I work my way through the dizzying array. But I've worked my way down to Michters so far and Yell is yet down the line.
Your point about 80 proof is well made though. So much of what I've read here has indicated the tendency of lower proof to represent lower quality. I would think there might be exceptions to this rule. But I don't know what they would be.

I second Mike's thanks for the great review. The review and the preceeding comments make me wish that I'd had an opportunity to try the 90 proof version. :(

Bob,
The 90 proof version can still be found but mostly below the Mason-Dixon line - after all it was contraband whiskey if sold up north!

If you make it to Louisville, I will see if I can get you a taste of the 90 proof.
