Is there a bad Van Winkle product?

Unread postby abcgroup » Thu Jul 28, 2005 9:39 pm

So...this is the question. I have Old Rip Van Winkle, Pappy Van 12 and Pappy Van 15 and damn it, they're all good. Is the 20 year worth 75 bucks? I will spend good money on GOOD whiskey.

You masters out there let the little grasshopper know how he should spend his money this weekend. I want to buy a bottle. Let me know if the Pappy 20 is worth it, or if I should buy 2 bottles instead.

Cheers,

Jeremy

Well, I generally feel like the only bad Van Winkle bottle is an empty one. Personally (keep in mind this is coming from someone with TWO Pappy 23s open on the sideboard), I think the Pappy 20 IS worth $75. In fact, it's often $10 more than that around here, and still a nice find. I sent someone home today after directing them to a store with $75 Lawrenceburg Pappy, and we were both very happy.

Jeremy,

Yes, I think it is worth the $$. I had been a Single Malt Scotch guy, when at WhiskyFest in NYC, I tried it for the first time, and the Pappy 20 opened my eyes to the quality of bourbon. I'd go for it.

I for one have never liked either the ten year old or the 23, but I love the 15 and would kill for the 20. So if you ever see me coming either say "Hi Bunghole! Have some Pappy!" or run for your life!

Worth is subjective, but to answer your question, yes.

True Barrel,

Which question are you giving the affirmative to: that Pappy 20 is worth the $$$ or that Van Winkle makes a bad product?

I love the 20year. By far one of the best bourbons around. I also slightly prefer the Lot B 12yr to the 15yr, very slightly. I have not found the 23 yr, the Family Reserve Rye, or the ORVW 107, but I will not hesitate buying any (or all) of them because the quality appears consistant. I do agree though, the bad bottle is the empty one.
