OWA Going Away

Unread postby Bourbon Joe » Thu Mar 29, 2012 8:52 pm

There is a lot of buzz on the other sites that OWA is going away. This was learned by others in a face to face with Harlan Wheatly himself. "Say it isn't so."

If that is true Joe That is TERRIBLE NEWS! OWA is perhaps the best value bourbon on the market! I guess I better run to the store and pick up a case

I have read that discussion. Who knows if it is true or not, and if so, when this will occur. Nonetheless, a very good excuse to pick up a case of OWA (maybe this is all strategic on BT's part to spike sales of OWA!!).

I would think that if they had plans for it to go away, then they would not have spent the money on upgrading the package design.

Well, true or not (and I certainly hope it is not true) I wound up getting a case each of OWA and Weller 12 year old. Guess I'll keep them safely stored out of sight and continue to buy current so long as it remains available. Although I am a Beam Small Batch enthusiast, I have to confess that the Weller 12 year especially is an awfully nice bourbon!!

I remeber Ken Weber stating that the name "Antique" needed to go away because of the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection. That many be what they have in mind. The future may have the name change but the 107 proof stay.

They can't keep calling a long established product "antique" anymore because they want to call some newer brands "antique". That's pricelass

In the eventuality of a shortage (or zombie attack, end of world, wild birthday weekend) I'm laying in a supply. The OWA old bottles, especially the spider bottle of OWA107 on the right front are the last to go. :)

"Antique" isn't original, anyway. I think United Distillers added it.
Old Weller 107 has been called a number of things. We have examples of it, in the gold filigree bottle, as "Antique, the original 107 BRAND" from before Buffalo Trace's current bottle, and as "The Original 107 PROOF", also in the gold-threaded bottle from before that. We also have an example in a very similar bottle, but without the threading, labeled "Original Barrel Proof" (which was 107). I don't see dropping the word "Antique" as any big deal.

And in addition to what Mike already brought up about the potential conflict with their "Antique Collection" I should add that Buffalo Trace probably also still owns the "Antique Bourbon" brand inherited from Schenley (who bought it from Frankfort Distillers). They may want to re-issue that one someday, too.

I gotta say I miss the "old" paper label. It brings me back to a time that never existed for me :P
