Is Basil Hayden lightboded and fresh like Beam White?

Unread postby dickelfanaustralia » Sat Sep 08, 2012 7:35 pm

is Basil Hayden light bodied like Beam white and fresh hit to it? Or is it dull and watery?

ts listed as 8 years while beam white is like 4. so is it fresh or more a mature whisky?
it not the money. I have Bookers and it too hot and much for me.

I actually like white light body. Does basil have a back palate like of soft rye and powdery or fine oak threads.

IIve had 6y beam 40% port finish. simple upfront then zero and very watery back palate. not my thing. Basil isnt like that?

Well sir, to answer you your question, (and I'm from Kentucky) Basil Haden is a glass of water, with a drop of bourbon, in a fancy wrapper.

half reviews say it dull and watery. is there any mid or back palate
What do they mean smooth? Do they mean smooth with no grain or wood notes.
so it nothing like old grand dad 86 vintage i had.

what is four roses yellow compared to basil.

what this devil cut. it meant to have big charcoal wood kick and sweetness.

cant drink tannic red wines at all.

eligh craig and other long aged bourbons too tannic for me.

Four Roses Yellow Label probably gets more respect around here than most of the other 80 proof bourbons. Also, it's about half the price of Basil Hayden. If you're wanting to try Beam products, I suggest Old Grandad 114. You can add ice or water until you find your comfort zone :)

limited choice in australia. price point is no issue.

devil cut or basil?

devil is not tannic like battery acid red wine? Does it have a smoky wood to it?
some basil reviews say dull and watery back plate. and is just silky. not oily wrap around the tongue or loads of rye and fine oak threads though it.

really liked that OLD GRAND DAD 86 in a vintage i had very much.

Buy online.
I've imported approx. 30 American whiskeys over the last 6 months (all of which are hard/impossible to get in Oz) and customs havent bothered me yet.

Otherwise try locally online at nickswines, has great range of bourbons including OGD114, just be prepared to pay.

Anyway basil is to be avoided. If u look around some smaller bottle shops still have original beam
black which is a good value drop (IMO better than most of their small batch offerings).

Another one worth trying at Dans is Old Virginia, it's a 6yr export only whiskey and one of the cheapest straight bourbons you will find in OZ, but still surprisingly good, might have been a lucky bottle but I was really surprised, will try another soon.

great advice.

price point is no issue
OLD GRAND DAD 114 is online at the beer store $100. So too 4 Roses. i read it's a light bodied one.
is BASIL to be advoid cause it dont suit you palate or its actually dull and watery at midpalate.
Black is little too much on the wood for me.
OGD 86 had soft rye and wood twigs? Hoping Basil is like that. Was going to buy tomorrow

As far as Four Roses Yellow goes............ I'll pass. I love FR products, but the Yellow Label is utter crap, in my opinion. I'd take Jim Beam Black for an 80 proofer any day over FR Yellow Label.

I might just buy basil. A chewy grain and fine timbers I'll be happy even with a delution.
You must like the biggest bourbons on earth if this is a drop of water.

I find the yellow label to be boring, bland and just......... nothing. I know I'm in the minorty with that opinion, but I also know there are a few people out there that share the same opinion of it. I find it hard to believe that a distillery that puts out such great bourbon, also puts this stuff on the shelves. :(

The yellow label is a mixture of all 10 of their recipes. I find it delightful. But, if you don't, that's OK too. But then again I hate Beam.
