Three (or more) intermediate Scotch whiskies;

Unread postby Landrum » Thu Aug 16, 2012 9:45 pm

A buddy of mine is new to single malts. Oh, he's had the standard Glenfiddich and Glenlivets along with a number of the more popular blends. He asked me for a list of intermediate single malts to try. Okay, I said, and rattled off a few that are moderately priced, relatively speaking, and also of good quality. My short list were : Bunnahabhain 12, Dalwhinnie 15, Aberlour 12 and Glenfiddich 15.

What might you have suggested?

Laphroaig 10yr CS
Highland Park 12yr
Auchentoshan 12yr
Talisker 10yr
Springbank 10yr
Balvenie Double Wood

That should give him a good idea of SMS.

I like every scotch listed so far, I would also add Old Pulteney 12 Year Old and Ancnoc 12 year old. Also Balblair

Ardmore Traditional Cask is very hard to beat for the price.

I forgot to mention Ardbeg 10 yr old in my initial list. At around $50 it's not too hard on the wallet and it is a rather good whisky, in my opinion. It's pretty hardcore for a newbie but it's not harsh at all. Of course, opinions vary.

And as was mentioned above, Highland Park 12 yr old....I mean, that's perhaps the entry level whisky that does double duty as an intermediate and one that regular drinkers can enjoy as well.

You know, honestly, I love so many different Scotches that it's hard to differentiate them by levels other than by price. There's very little doubt when you taste a great one and equally little doubt when you get some swill. As a whole, there are more good'uns than trash.
