I had some. Not too bad, better than the 80, but not as good as the 101.

It's a vast improvement over the old 80 proof but I still wouldn't buy a bottle.

This must be why I saw (and bought a bottle) Wild Turkey on sale at the LCBO last weekend...

Jimmy Russel assured me last week that the 101 Rye is NOT discontinued.
Because of the sudden demand for rye whiskey, they were left in a position of not having enough to fill their orders. The "diluted" 81-proof was their means of meeting their comittments, and they DO intend to continue that expression. But 101 rye will return as soon as the whiskey currently aging reaches the correct maturity.

So the question is when that will be, which could take as long as four years. And what price point it will return at. Sigh. If it does take the four years they like to age their rye at, it will most likely either be from the new plant, or a mixture of juice from the old and new plants. Which, as they years go by, is probably not a bad thing for them to do with their 101 and 81 bourbons, either.

I wonder if they will now up their rye production to TWO days out of the year, instead of just one. Maybe once every six months?
