Talk me into/out of it

Unread postby bartmc » Wed Mar 14, 2012 10:36 pm

Went to my local package store today to pick up a bottle of van winkle family reserve rye for the NCAA festivities this weekend. I look over and.... There it is... They have 4 bottles of Pappy Rye 23. It's 220 bucks a bottle. I had my credit card out but put it back. Is this stuff worth that price... if so I'm going to have a real hard time sharing it.

Don't know if I would have bought all four, BUT . . . I surely would have bought at least a couple! Go back and buy some!!

Great, 50/50 :bounce: Probably just going to be happy with the 55 buck bottle I bought and carry on. I'd like a taste but don't think I can shell out $220 for a sip. Went to Jocky Silks in Louisville a few months back and they were out of it.

I agree with Joe, if you can find the 15 year old BUY IT! Much less expensive and better in my opinion

The Nay's have it... They only had Van Winkle Family Reserve Rye and the Pappy 23. I'll make do with the Van Winkle Family Reserve and stop back in at Jocky Silks next time I'm in Louisville to have a taste.

Try the Bourbon's Bistro. They should have Pappy 23. If not then the Seelbach or the Brown should have some. The 15yo Pappy is better in my opinion, but I don't like a bitter tannic wood taste in my bourbon.

The next time you are in town, let me know. I will buy you a drink at the Bourbon's Bistro - not a Pappy 23, but a decent bourbon.

WOW! I would have passed also, that's a little to steep for a bottle.
Cheers!

I actually thought it was a bargain given the prices it goes for on the internet. Actually just watched a couple of "collectible bottle" auctions end on eBay at $360.00 + $20 shipping.

Plus good drinks are hard to find here in MT, luckily I brought back 5 bottles of samples from KY last time I went and the local store elected to start buying 3 of them. (Rock Hill Farms, Angels Envy and Four Roses)

Sounds insane to me. Great bourbon can be had for less than $30/bottle. Booze is booze, don't squander your money on it. Lets see, we put booze in a glass, and then we drink it, what am I missing here. I absolutely love Four Roses Single Barrel, and Knob Creek, and I wouldn't consider spending a penny more fon anything else.

Buy it and have buyer's remorse. As has been suggested, get the 15 year old, if you can find it. I have always found the 23 YO to be too tannic for even my taste......... and you will be hard pressed to find anyone on this site more appreciative of old bourbons than I am.

If you have not tried Wild Turkey Rare Breed, please do so. My favorite overall pour right now is still Pappy 15, but the RB comes in a close second, a VERY close second.

Cheers,
