Buffalo Trace vs Jim Beam

Unread postby Vital » Mon Jan 09, 2012 9:37 pm

Never had BT and after a lot of positive reviews and my feel for trying all the best bourbon can offer i decided to try it.
To my disappointment apparently BT tastes pretty much just like Jim Beam. I actually took out my bottle of Jim Beam Black to compare both drinks side by side. Short of JBB being sweeter and having longer alcohol burn and finish in general and BT being more spicy they are identical. Don't get me wrong, i like Jim Beam but i guess i expected BT to be different. Kind of like Eagle Rare or Knob Creek but instead i got... .Jim Beam in different bottle lol.

Am i alone here on noticing how similar BT and JB are?
Where my expectations simply to high? and ER and KC beat the hell out of BT anytime of the day?

p.s. (just for the record) and even thou BT and JBB are very much alike when it comes to flavor imo JB is way better - it's sweeter, it's taste is "fuller" and finish is a lot longer and fulfilling. Just saying :)

I personally enjoy BT a little more, but JBB is a solid choice. They are similar in a couple of ways, which could contribute to a similar profile. They are both higher corn mashbills and they both use a #4 char on the barrels. I'm not sure of the standard BT age (or at least it escapes me at the moment), but the amount of time in the barrel and the mashbill might be close enough to make it hard to differentiate. Lately the standard BT has actually been tasting a little thin to me...adding a very small splash of GTS (same mashbill) gives it a little kick and improves the flavor to me.

Thanx! That's the word i was looking for trying to describe BT - thin. It was just like a diet, 0 calories version of Jim Beam Black.

I'm pretty sure I saw some Jim Beam here. I will have to make a comparison. I really enjoyed the Buffalo Trace. :D
Cheers!

I also like Beam Black better than Buffalo Trace, and Makers Mark for that matter. Beam Black has better mouth feel, and a better flavor profile than BR or MM. I think BT is a bit thin, and the late spicy kick isn't all that great.

The only drawback of Beam Black is it's big number one and lacks uniqueness of the smaller brands. Beam is big for a reason, great bourbon at a fair price. The Beam bottle looks like a Jack Daniels knock-off. The square shape of the bottle makes for smaller cases which saves on shipping. The smaller brands do have nice looking, unique bottles.
