I had just about the same experience. This stuff is just about awful. Pinesol with wood alcohol. Nothing pleasant about it.
Too much of anything is bad, but too much of good whiskey is barely enough.

I know chuck's position on "Bad Bottles", but there could be an odd batch out there that is very wood alc strong.... I have a pretty good idea on a good vs not so good rye, and the one I tasted was 180 out from what other folks that have a good set of taste buds thought... I am going to taste this again as soon as I see it in a pub to compair....

Add the same opinion for me for the 21 y/o. Not in the same league as Willetts or LeNells.

Interesting. I have a bottle of the 21 as well, and it's fantastic. Makes me wonder if Rittenhouse has some quality control issues.

My bottle, bought in Europe, also had an unpleasant petroleum taste. Good to know I'm not alone.

I picked up some BIB recently and think it's great. It seems to me that Rittenhouse and Elijah Craig must be the two most contravercial whiskies out there. Some people say that they love it. Some people claim it to have something really wrong with it. As far as "bad" bottles go; I once purchased a bottle of Bombay Gin that was just awful. It was definitely very different from any other bottle I had tried before of that stuff. I've never had any Rittenhouse I thought was bad. Some of the earlier bottles of Elijah Craig 12 had sort of a mild peach fruit charecteristic, but were not bad in my opinion.

Along with EW 1783, we think this is one of the last medium-to-top-shelf whiskies at bottom-shelf price points out there. Maybe the export bottles are different? We once got an export bottle of Four Roses from a friend that was VERY different from the US version flavor-wise (to us, anyway). Chuck/Mike/others in the know, is there an export selection process?

I've only had one bottle but I just love Ritt BIB, I also have Ritt 23 that is excellent also. Rittenhouse is sold by HH but is distilled by BF.
