Old Rip Van Winkle 10 yo 90 proof

Unread postby angelshare » Sat Oct 10, 2009 4:09 pm

A friend of ours procured some of this on a recent trip to KY and I (Dave) got BIG VANILLA unlike any other bourbon I have ever tasted. We have sipped this brand intermittently for 15 years, and this seemed like a significant departure from its usual profile to me...but not a bad departure by any stretch. Is this just an errant bottle/errant taste buds, or has anyone else noticed a change?

I've only been drinking the 10yr 90 proof for a couple years... Gone through maybe 4-5 bottles.. but they've all been fairly consistent, and all really tasty in my opinion. Definitely big on the vanilla... good amount of spice.. nicely balanced, and smooth. It would be my daily drinker if it was more readily available.

How much are you paying in Austin Enzo? I know one store with a few of these and they want $30 a bottle. I can get Rare Breed for that so I have passed every time.

Close to $30. Probably $26.

I've never tried Rare Breed.. I've always shyed away from Wild Turkey... perhaps it's time I gave t a shot.

You have shyed away from one of the best bourbon brands in the bourbon world? WT 101 should be a fixture in everyone's bar. I don't go for much of the higher priced Turkey's, but Rare Breed is super complex and a great price per proof ratio. Man, no Turkey products? Your life must be very boring.

Well, on that recommendation, I'll give the Rare Breed and the 101 a shot :)

...and report back with my findings.

Enzo,

I definitely agree with Don's recommendation. IMO, Wild Turkey makes some outstanding bourbon. You definitely need to check out their products and let us know what you think.

Ok... picked up a bottle of Rare Breed today... drinking it now...

Lovely nose... reminiscent of VW Lot B but with more fire... fruity

Vanilla, then quite a bit of rye and spice right away... tannin heavy... and a bit unbalanced... leaves a bit of a harsh, bitter after taste... very very oaky and dry

Nice long finish... the slow burn of the alcohol sticks around for a bit...

I'll have to spend some more time with this one... but overall, it leaves an unpleasant aftertaste... too much oak for me I think. Feel like I'm chewing on a soggy branch of an oak tree.

I'm gonna let it sit for a while in the bottle... and give it a try in a few weeks. I learned from my experience with ER 17 that some bourbons really do open up and improve given a bit of bottle time after opening.
