Proof that Rye is back in the Mainstream

So there I was in the neighborhood Safeway at 10pm on a Sunday night, minding my own business, and what do I see but the final proof of a quick 5 year transformation of rye from a tiny niche to a...common massmarket product. Not only did the Safeway have Beam Rye for $17.99, but it was on sale for $12.99 and (brace yourself!) $11.70 by the 6-pack! I normally find it tacky to dwell on prices on forums, but this is a seachange in the availabiliy and acceptance of rye in the marketplace.

Rye is Here!

Finally, a jug price on the spirit the wife insists on for her mixed drinks. Now, if only Sazerac will follow suit with either Saz Jr. or Fleischmann's I'll have a full selection of mixer ryes.

I do love a deal.

No, 750ml's.
But getting rye for that jug price is something I haven't seen in California unless it's been on a shelf for 25 years. And I've never seen rye in a grocery chain before.
