I agree with you Mike I do reviews for the same reason.
I know I am not as experienced as a lot of others on here but no one picked up a bottle of bourbon for the first time and picked up everyrthing that was there. Bourbon is a journey and I do reviews as part of that journey to better understand it.

Mike,
You have come up with a very interesting poll. I am looking forward to seeing how people vote. I voted because I think my opinion may have some value, but the real rerason I do most of my reviews is because Mark and Chris worked so hard to get this feature designed, I wanted to make my contribution to the website. I am just as interested as to the reason why people do not review the bourbons.

I don't do reviews because most of the time I can't put a name to that flavor I pick up in a bourbon. It's there I just can't put a name to it. There's been a couple I have been able to like J W Dant is Cherries and I tasted chocolate in EC12. But most of the time it's like that trivia question that you know the answer to but you just can't get it out of your mouth.

I review mostly to help myself understand flavors better in the bourbons I try. I also don't read other reviews of the bourbon I'm reviewing until after for the same reason. I like to see what I'm not picking up, so I can concentrate on finding those flavors in future tastings.

A second reason I review that is not on the list, is when there is an obscure older bottlings that have not been reviewed and I have a bottle available, it's fun to fill in the blank so to speak and help others understand what the bourbon is like. I think it's almost like filling in missing information in a history book.

I'm also looking forward to seeing the results of this poll.

I voted "I do not do bourbon reviews because I do not
find the aromas and tastes that the reviewers claim
they do" which is pretty self-explanatory. I've been a
bourbon/whiskey drinker for almost 30 years and when
I read "...hints of nutmeg, caramel, and chestnut", I'm
thinking "HUH?!" I am able to discern taste differences
between various bourbons but I'm afraid my palate just
can't see the subtle nuances of an individual bourbon
that other tasters do (maybe those 30 years have
something to do with it...)

One time I can recall being able to pinpoint different
flavors of a drink was with a bottle of KILO KAI spiced
rum. My wife & I opened one up and after tasting, she
ran to the pantry and pulled out a spice rack. She could
pick out the individual spices better than I but I was able
to follow along. (By the way, KK gets a big thumbs up
from me. From the skull & crossbones logo to the frosted
brown bottle with grip tape along the neck - it's a cool
looking bottle and the insides aren't too shabby either.
Consider it a practice drink for those wishing to improve
their review skills!)

That said, I'm happy to contribute photos for the bottle
reviews whenever the call goes out. We all help out
however we can...

Good poll, Mike! I write reviews in order to sharpen my tasting skills, and I also strive to write accurate discriptions. I hope that readers find my reviews both unbiased and reliablly informative.
