an afternoon with wt rye

Unread postby tmckenzie » Mon May 11, 2009 8:38 am

I had time yesterday afternoon to pour a drink of something I had not had in a while. Wild Turkey rye. It was one of the best drinks I had in a while. The nose on it is unbelievable, and the taste. I even noticed a fine layer of fat in the bottom of the bottle. It must not be chill filtered. How many other people out there find this rye enjoyable?

I think WT Rye is great. I like the regular 101 too, but the rye just a little bit more. It definitely gives you a lot of bang for your buck. I hope I keep seeing it on shelves. As it is now, I only know a few places within an hours drive that usually have it. Another to try; Rittenhouse BIB is pretty good. Sazerac is good, but different. It's lighter and sweeter to my tastes.

Jeff,
Are you saying that all 101 WT is unchill filtered?? That is news to me. The Bourbon Society had to literally fight with Jimmie to non-chill fliter their release of WTKS. Where did you get that information??

Yes, but I never see any in WT 101 or Rare Breed.

I really like Wt Rye 101 it's one bottle I like to keep on hand when I can but can't get at the local liquor store. The only Rye they carry is Templeton's.

I'm a big fan of WT rye. While I'll admit I'm not a rye connoisseur (yet), I feel like my first step in the rye world was a very good one.

I bought a bottle of Sazerac rye, and it is good, but I still feel WT rye is better. I haven't had much exposure to rye, beyond the two I mentioned above, and Jim Beam rye, but I'd be willing to try others. On my list are:

Pikesville straight rye
Rittenhouse straight rye

I haven't found either one of them in and around my county, but I'll grab one or both of them if I do.

My opinion is simple and straightforward. When you drinks Wild Turkey Rye, you drinks one of the best whiskies available in America today.

She is wild, she is robust, she is spicy, she grabs aholt of you and turns you every which way but lose. She challenges you upfront and rewards you with her sensuous directness. She is a woman who only yields to your appreciative response. Do not think you can conquer her. She is your equal (or superior) in every way.

SHE IS AMERICAN WHISKEY!!

mozilla turned me on to WT Rye, and I have to say, I love it. I like to experiment with different distilled beverages (not all Bourbon), like most of us on this forum, but I have picked a few "regular" spirits that form the foundation of my bar:

Maker's Mark Bourbon
Jack Daniel's Black Label
The Glenlivet 12 year old single malt Scotch
(I have a bottle of The Glenlivet 15 year old, 18 year old and 21 year old as well)
Crown Royal
Wild Turkey Rye

I am currently sippin on the following non-regular spirits:
Four Rose's single barrel Bourbon
Elijah Craig 12 year old
Blanton's single barrel Bourbon
Eagle Rare 10 year old single barrel
Sazerac Rye
Laphroaig single malt Scotch

The "regulars" always have a spot in my bar, and the transients come and go as I find them.

If I had to stock a Canadian.....Canadian Club 12 otherwise....Tom Moore Bib would go here
Wild Turkey rye
In the well....Kentucky Tavern

Isn't it fun to have an opinion :blackeye:

Double Barreled... do you mean aged in one barrel, then finished in another?

I don't think Jimmy Russel himself could get that accomplished.
