Boomsma Oude Fine Old Genever - A Product of Holland

Proof: 80

Bottle Information: A fine blend of wheat spirits and malt distillate and patient aging in oak barrels. Boomsma Oude is a very rich, smooth Genever with an elegant flavor. Available only in limited quantities. - Aged for at least one year in oak barrels.

Color: pale straw yellow

Nose: Rich vanilla and a hint of grain. Not very complex at all.

Taste: Vanilla and a hint of oak with some hazelnut.

Finish: Vanilla and the hazelnut flavor that last quite a while.

Notes: This is really more of a whiskey than a gin. No botanical flavors added and a nice clean vanilla flavor that makes me think that it was aged in toasted but not charred barrels. There is no red to the color and no caramalized sugars in the taste. Even a used barrel that was charred would give some caramel flavor. This is an interesting drink.

If you`re interested in jenevers i can recommend the following brands;Oude jenever en Corenwijn from distilleerderij de drie boompjes,Rutte jenevers en van Wees jenevers. These also come in limited quantities and are really good.

This bottle came to me from a friend whose wife is Dutch. He brought it back with him after a visit and he knew I was interested in trying some real "Gin" from the Netherlands and passed the bottle on to me. I found it interesting and would drink some more, but it is not something I would rush out to purchase on a regular basis.

Mike, you should try some of the flavored jenevers. I got to try them in Amsterdam and they were amazingly good. Typically they are considered a womens' drink, but I think they are quite good. I've been trying to get a hold of some stateside, but have been unable so far...however, I would stay away from the Jenever Cremes....
