A good 5 cent cigar?

Unread postby bourbonv » Tue Jun 06, 2006 9:40 am

Last night I went to a bourbon dinner at the Bourbon's Bistro that featured Chet Zoeller and Jefferson Reserve as well as the Master Brewer from the Bluegrass Brewing Company that makes the Bourbon Barrel Stout. (By the way, Chet is a reader of this site and loves the historical debates and book reviews). After dinner, several of use (Gayle Hack, JD Knaebel and ChuckMick) retired to the patio for some cigars and Twisted Spoke. One of our many subjects of conversation was cigars. My question was What are some good cigar bargains that could be an "everyday smoke"? Any opinions?

Mike,
I continually check JR, Famous Smoke Shop, Black Cat, Thompsons, etc. to see what's on sale. If they sound good and are about 2 bucks a pop or less, I'll buy em and smoke em up quickly. I don't like to be chained to just one brand of every day smokes. I find this works well for me.

Mike,

Having tried a lot of two dollar smokes, my advice is to look towards the four and five dollar a stick offerings. JR's offers weekly specials and always has good deals on five packs. Someone with a small fifty stick desktop humidor would be better off buying several five packs of first quality smokes to fill their humidors than just buying a single box or bundle. Trading sticks and box splits are also quite popular.

Here are some of my favorite sources:

After giving this topic some additional thought, I would have to reccomend Flor de Oliva bundles. These are first quality sticks without the fancy box or the high price. Anyone who has smoked an Oliva Master Blends or one of their famous "O" line of cigars can attest the Oliva family grows some of the very finest tobaccos and roll some pretty mean sticks.

Somewhat new to the Flor de Oliva lineup is their '10th Anniversary' expression. These have a very tasty Sumatra leaf wrapper and the blend of tobaccos is excellent. In a departure from the usual bundle the 10th Anni's come in a neat 24 count octagonal box, and can be had for $50 shipped. That's an excellent deal for some very tasty sticks. http://www.smokeall.com has the best prices, but Mike Banks at http://www.mrbundles.com is a personal friend of mine (known world wide as "Uncle Mikey") and will usually price match if you call to order. Just tell him Linn sent ya!

Mike, if you like a milder Dominican cigar you might want to try the new Consuegra DR (these are a new offering from the Dominican Republic) corona natural's from JR Cigars. I just bought, & tried, the Corona natural (wrapper) & I personally think it's a great value for $1.00 a stick. Light Conneticut wrapper, mild, burns good, reminds me of the Dominican Montecristo or Don Diego. I liked it for the price so much I ordered 2 more bundles.
That said, these are 2nds so you can never be sure what you're getting a 2nd of :D , but for the price I'll take a chance.
Keep up the good bourbon reviews, always enjoy them. I've been smoking cigars for 35 years but just recently got into trying good bourbon while visiting family in Lexington.
