The two academies that are open to the public are going to be Saturday March 3rd and Saturday March 24th. The cost is $125.00. They are listed from 9:00 to 3:00 but usually go just a little longer. This year Chris Morris and I are going to try charring a barrel with straw. We have never tried this before and it should be interesting to watch. I am also changing my historical talk to discuss the history of the charred barrel, the origin of bourbon and how bourbon as we know it today came about. It should be fun.

These academies have pretty much sold out for the last 4 years, so you should probably get your tickets soon.

I had lunch with Chris Morris yesterday. He had been out to Bluegrass cooperage to pick out a couple of barrels to be charred. The first one is going to be a real experiment and he plans to send out some of the staves to the lab to be tested for the flavor components in the wood. If it looks good, the second one may even get filled with whiskey. That could be interesting as well.

Woodford Reserve Bourbon Academy

The barrels sound like it will be very fun!
I play with barrel aging myself. I have 1 litre barrels that I'll put stuff in and age. Perhaps I'll bring some with me.
What I did find out is that I have some very greedy angels in my house.
It's amazing how quickly things age in such small barrels.

Looking forward to seeing you Mike!

If you don't remember me.. I'm the guy who had the laptop during the summer bourbon academy.

Rick,
I do remember you. You were the lifesaver when Chris did not have the computer for the powerpoint presentation.

I think you will enjoy this year's Academy. It promises to be very informative and fun. Chris hinted we might even see some barrels from this year's new experimental whiskey and take a sample. I look forward to seeing you there.
