Brooklyn Bourbon Festival at LeNell's

Unread postby Mark » Mon Sep 19, 2005 12:55 pm

Yesterday we had much of the NY contingent gat together at LeNells for a full day of bourbon drinking, cooking and bullshitting! LeNell's store got quite busy at times which was great for her. I had fun taking over for a bit pouring samples for customers. LeNell had a great spread in the back of the store in which she put out every open bottle she had for customers to sample from.

I knew the day before that she had just gotten in the Berheim Wheat Whiskey but was happily suprised to also see she got in this years Old Forester Birthday Bourbon as well. We didnt get to try that but we did try the Bernheim. It was a big hit amongst most people there. As someone else noted, I detected slight scotchlike tones on the finish. Overall a good and quite unique product, not like your ordinary bourbon.

Thanks LeNell for having us all over and making it a fun Sunday. I'll be posting up some pics from the day! Here's to hoping we can all get together again sometime soon!

As is evident from the pix, I had a GREAT time yesterday! :occasion7: The weather was great, we had some wonderful bourbons, some good beer, food & company! Met a bunch of new folks which was very nice. I've got to take a look at some of the pix I took, and if I've got anything to add to Mark's great pix, I'll post 'em. BTW, great shots Mark & I'm not tellin' what LeNell & I were talking about!

LeNell, thanks to you and Ben for hosting this wonderful get together, it was a blast.

Bob you might as well spill, and tell everyone how you broke your flipper, as long as it isn't too embarrassing.

Linn,

This I can tell about...but it's not what it appears. I found out that I've got carpal tunnel syndrome in both wrists. Had surgery last week, and will need to have the other done in the not to distant future.

It looks like everyone had a great time, sorry I couldn't be there! Nice t-shirt, LeNell, that ad copy would never pass the legal test today! When I was at Barton's during the recent tour there with Randy and others Greg Davis (master distiller) told me in response to whether Barton's makes rye whisky that they do but most of it goes into "rock and rye". He said, "I don't know if you know what that is". I said, "well...". :)

Hey Randy I tasted that barrel-strength 1792 too but I didn't see "bottles" handed out. How'd you score that??

Barrel Strength 1792

Well Gary, just how was that barrel strength 1792?

It was outstanding. The high original proof made it regular 1792 "plus plus" and somehow just coming from the barrel it seemed "fresher" than the bottled version. I think Randy was in a separate group and maybe they were given a bottle but I don't think anyone in our group was. That's okay, just to have that taste was special. I had a taste at HH the night before from a stream of whisky coming from a barrel being dumped. It was as good but different, "minty", the Barton whiskey was more "malty". What surprised me was the amount of heavy char residue that falls out of the barrel when dumped. There was a layer which looked like charcoal used for a barbecue, except wetted, built up in the trough over which the whiskey was poured so the whiskey was almost receiving a filtration. It all went into a large cistern in the basement and many, many barrels were being mingled in that tank.

Thanks to all who came out to make life a bit more fun. It's awfully hard for us to get away so to have all y'all come to us was a blast. I desperately needed that get together in more ways than one!

For once in a lifetime, I hung a "gone fishin' sign on the door the next day and spent time with out of town guests.

Great to have friends to enjoy bourbon with! I sure hope we can make the Sampler!

Wonderful pictures. Always good to match a face with written conversations. Doesn't anybody ever get drunk at any of these bashes?

Gary.....That SB barrel proof of 1792 was special. Richer, fuller than any 1792 I've ever had. While our small group was in warehouse Z tasting from the barrel, I asked if we could take some back for the Gazebo. Our un-named guide said "sure".....if you have something to put it in. Since we were in the Rolling Copper Still and had been asked to help caravan our group to the warehouse......I quickly emptied a full liter of bottled water. Our guide then "thieved" it full for us. Upon returning to the GN, I poured it into an empty Van Blankle bottle and wrote down the pertinent facts. Distilled in Feb '97......warehouse Z....barrel proof......bottled Sept '05.....single barrel.....etc. It didn't last long......I swear none made it back to Houston.

That's a great bourbon story, Randy.

That's what I get for attending the Gala. :)

With all the attendees of the Brooklyn Bourbon Festival, it's so sad to learn that I'm the only one that got a good buzz! :( :? I wonder how that could have happened with all those great bourbons sitting there. Oh well, when its time to party, I party! :partyman:
