The Old Potero I was thinking of is the one from the whiskey magazine tasting last year that was aged for about 7 years. It was quite nice and I think others would enjoy trying it if you can get it.

Wednesday is fine with me if it works for the others.

Brenda, I do hope you will make it there and brig your camera (hopefully the new one you are saving for).

I'll be there! Wouldn't miss it for anything. And, I'll bring a camera, even if I have to borrow one. Had to buy tires for the car, so the camera savings had a little setback...

That doesn't sound like the two commercial offering, Mike. The 18th century mentioned is only one year old (in toasted, not charred barrels) and the 19th century is 3 years in charred barrels. The new iteration of that one is 90 proof, not the 126 or whatever the origional was. It is quite good and very different from anything else I've tried.

I was able to find a bottle of Old Potrero here in Calfornia for the Bourbon Bistro dinner on that Wednesday nite that I;d like everyone to sample.

The front label reads:

"125.1 proof"

"single Malt"

"Barrel strength"

"Pot Distilled"

"18th Century Style Spirit" (nothing about whiskey, or bourbon!)

"a distilled spirit produced from 100% rye malt mash, and aged in uncharred oak barrels"

"for sale only in California"

So...what is this stuff? The color is very straw . . . amazingly no color for full barrel proof

Do you know how long it was aged? I probably have shirts older than this.

The liquor store also had another expression of Old Petrero (at the same price) but it was 90 proof and it was called rye whiskey....

I'm anxious to try this.....see you at the festival!

You have the original 1 year old 18th century expression. The 90 proof you found is 3 years old. There was also a 3 year old cask strength before the 90 came out.

You sure get the malted grain. It's amazingly smooth for something so young but I prefered the 3 year old at 90 (haven't tried the 3 year old at cask strength). All three of these are not (IMO) mainstream pours but something you try when you are looking for a diversion. They are unlike Bourbons or Ryes as I know them.

I've never seen or heard of a 7 year old expression. That seems like it would be very good indeed.

I do have a three yr old straight rye distilled in 1998. So Maytag could have saved some barrels for a seven year bottling, but I have yet to see any available.

Just received an email from Julian Van Winkle - He and Preston are going to come to the Bistro.
