Weller? Lot "B"?

Unread postby BourbonBalls » Thu Mar 02, 2006 2:17 pm

Just a thought/question:

* William Larue Weller=12 years old

* VanWinkle Lot "B"=12 years old

* Lot "B"=90 proof

* WLW=Barrel Proof

* Both from Buffalo Trace

Is WLW just Lot "B" at barrel Proof?

I did them side by side adding enough water to the WLW to proof it down to 90......

Very similar!

Both Yummy . . . . :D

WLW wasmade from a recipe that was distilled at BT. BT for a long time distilled wheated bourbon for other bottlers.

Weller 12, I believe uses that same bourbon.

Van Winkle "lot B" utilized Stitzel-Weller bourbon which BT acquired in the JVW agreement.

I imagine the time has arrived for other whiskies to fill the "lot b " since Stitzel-Weller has been shut down since 1992.

If I recall, Julian had a "lot a" whiskey which was a rye flavoured bourbon. It was used in his earlier releases such as the first bottling of the 23 yr VWFR. He then acquired a significant supply of S-W whiskey which he referred to as "lot b". So, if it says "lot b" on the label .....

Not all Van Winkle 12 y/o Lot B is SW whiskey. The very early bottlings were. According to Julian, there is no way via the label, or bottle, to tell when the switch to BT whiskey was made. According to Julian the taste is such that they cannot be told apart. I beg to disagree.

I stand corrected. The Van Winkle 12 began using Bernheim whiskey(not S-W or BT) last summer or fall. The previous ten years(the very early bottlings?) used S-W.

Dave,
You are correct. Bernheim whiskey was used directly after the SW stocks were depleted (August 2005). This will be the case until BT has 12 y/o wheater stock, at which time BT whiskey will be used (most probably for the better).

Comments on 'Lot B' and a question.....

I opened up my first bottle of 'Lot B' this weekend and I must say that it would warrant the creation of a new human taste receptor called "deliciousness". The aroma left me with the impression that I had a micro-factory in my nose busily manufacturing those trays of dried fruits and nuts, sprinkled with spices :) . Then the first sip, wow, do I wish I could capture that 1st taste more than once ..... what a wonderful oily feel rolling around my mouth, transitions of sweet maple, caramel, malt and I thought I tasted (ever so slight) butterscotch ..... absolutely superb !!

The Lot B I tried was purchased in a PA LCB store and was delivered there in August 2005 - I have several questions about this :

(1) would this be the Bernheim or the SW product ?

(2) a search did not reveal any comparative 'tasting notes' for both variations of this product, do any of you 'taster's have such notes and/or can you share opinions for both versions even if not side-by-side ?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Since you purchased it in August of 2005, I'm reasonably sure you have some SW whiskey there. Thats just about when the switch was made but things in the PA pipeline move slow, so I'm reasonably sure you got a SW.
