Old Grandad Before 1987

The reviews of Grandad show remarkable similarities.

My recollection of National Distillers' Grandad - as close to the pre-Pro original as we'll ever get - is however quite different. I recall it being being rich and fruity without as much of a raw rye hit.

Does anyone (Mike Veach?) have in their collection a mid-80's or earlier Old Grandad? It would be interesting to see taste notes and consider them against the slew of notes for the current bottling.

Gary,
I have had pre-Beam Old Grand Dad. John Lipman has several bottles ranging in age from the 50's up to present and the one thing we found is how close Beam came to keeping the flavor profile of the brand. It has been a few years since we tried this and maybe we should try it again to see if we still agree with that verdict. How about it John? Do you still have that range of bottles for Old Grand Dad?

Well, most interesting, and sometimes memories play funny tricks. Gents, I'd love to participate, even if (as I'd imagine) this called for an ad hoc trip to Cinci or Louisville. Something for mid-January, perhaps..?

I recently picked up some tax stamp OGD miniatures to do this exact comparison against the modern Beam version -- I'll let you know what I discover.

I had a drink from a 1944 bottle of Old Crow at Koli's bar last week -- recognizable as bourbon, but very, very different from anything today (never mind the Beam Old Crow!)

Good notes, thanks. What is Koli's bar? (Koji's, in Japan?)

Does that bar specialise in older whiskey? If so which others does it carry?
