Chuck's description of the term "Modern Bourbons" set me to thinking about the new trend in bourbon. The "Modern Bourbons" are very interesting and most of them worth exploring. At the same time I think the consumer should reconsider many of the Old Favorites. I can usually find an old favorite equivalent of a modern bourbon that I like just as well and at a better price. Some examples I can think of are as follows:
Maker's Mark - Old Fitzgerald 1849
Jefferson Reserve - Old Charter Classic 90 12yo
Buffalo Trace - Ancient Ancient Age 10yo.
Ridgemont Reserve "1792" - Very Old Barton Bottled in Bond
Woodford Reserve - Old Forester 100 proof
Basil Hayden - Old Grand Dad Bottled in Bond
Evan William's Single Barrel - Old Charter 10yo.
Knob Creek - Jim Beam Black
These are all "Modern Bourbons" with an Old Favorite that has a taste profile very similar, in my opinion, to them. I am sure that other people could add to this list.
