On Friday (yesterday) six of us from the Bourbon Society here in Louisville went to Buffalo Trace and picked a barrel. We tasted out of 5 barrels and picked a very spicy, peppery very good one. We also had a hard hat tour and lunch. Very nice day. Here's a few pics.

Great pics!

Green with envy.

I would love to do this but would want my juice bottled barrel proof and unfiltered. Do you think they would be open to doing that?

No, Buffalo Trace won't do that. But, Four Roses will.

Any idea how many bottles are in a barrel?

Where can I find information on the cost so I know how many of my friends I need to recruit to make it so I can afford it?

Well, there can be as little as 60 bottles or up to about 150 bottles in a barrel, or more. Current pricing for Four Roses is:
100 proof program, between $3800 and $5800. Barrel proof program from $5300 to $7400.

If you're buying a whole barrel, why would they charge more for higher proof? It costs them less to bottle at barrel proof (fewer bottles and less man-hours), so it seems wrong that they charge more.

You forget that taxes are based upon proof - the higher the proof, the higher the tax rate. Since tax is based upon a proof gallon, a product that is 120 proof is 20% higher on the tax rate, $2.70 a gallon more on the Federal excise tax alone.

But there are fewer gallons, so it should offset quite a bit.

You also have to look at it from a business point of view. It cost money for the label approval and such. You also don't want a barrel proof, unfiltered product showing up on shelves at close to the same cost as your normal brand and having consumers complain because the regular brand does not taste as good. I am just glad that Four Roses and others are offering a barrel proof unfiltered program and I think it is worth the extra cost.

You don't know what you're going to get until it's dumped.

Correct me if I am wrong Gayle, but what I think you are trying to say is you don't know how many bottles you will get until it is dumped.

You're right Mike, that is what I meant. I was drinking Four Roses when I typed that.

That makes more sense. I lost sight of the fact that the majority of people using these programs are liquor stores for their "private selection" offerings.
