Monday evening - taking the lead from another post about the upcoming Parker's Heritage release - decided to attempt a similar rye/wheated mix. Took one shots of Weller Antique 107 and two shots of Evan Williams SB. Feeling it could use a little more spice .. added just a bit of Willett Rye. Divided that up with a friend and we both agreed that the result .. over ice .. was a darn good way to end the evening. I'll do it again!

Manhattans made with WT rye while cooking lamb shanks, will have some Spanish tempranillo with dinner then thinking vanilla ice cream with a chocolate & bourbon sauce might do well for dessert, probably pour myself a OGD114 to "help with the digestion"

Great, alext. I had lamb shanks yesterday meself, at a Persian restaurant. It was a great meal and I have a new recipe for doing lamb shankds my own self which I plan to try in the next month or so.

Having a little four roses single barrel limited release 2011. It needs a splash of water to open it up, It is Superb! IMHO

Yeh Mike gotta love shanks any which way, I had some cumin rubbed shanks at a Chinese Sichuan joint the other night, delicious and insparational.
It's the time in Australia now for slow cooking, especially lamb, cold weather and the start of the spring lamb season, we have a national love affair with the cuddly critters (not in the kiwi way though)

finished up a bottle of Old Rip Van Winkle 10 107 and then proceeded to compare it to a pour of Wl Weller 12 year. The Weller 12 year was much more wood/pine/tobacco in the finish. The ORVW 10 was more spice and maple. Both good in their own right but I really dig the wl weller 12 in 1 liter bottles for $19; having both together really made me appreciate both pours for their dramatic differences.

my birthday last week I went to my friend's house and brought some 2004 Birthday Bourbon. unfortunately my friend and his girlfriend just shot the bourbon down and didn't sip it. sad.

So, caveat. I like wheated bourbons more than others, I'm not a rye guy. I don't like the really sweet ones (though I moved from scotch to bourbon to get that little bit of sweetness in the flavor profile), but also don't like bourbons with too big a bite (think Bookers). My favorites to date (not counting either the Jefferson 18yo or the Elijah Craig 20yo) have been Blantons, Hirsch 25yo and 28yo (love that juice) and Pappy 20yo (I have some '09 and '10 stocks). I found the Elijah Craig 20yo a little 'light' for me. The color is dark, but it tastes 'light' if that makes any sense. Blind, I would have said the 20yo EC was a good single malt scotch. I found the Jefferson 18yo to have a little more bite and the flavor profile fit what I like a little more. Alone, I'm sure I would have enjoyed the 20yo EC, but against the 18yo Jefferson, I liked that one more. For the 20yo EC, says my barrel is #5. For both the 18yo Jefferson and the 20yo EC, says that they went in barrel in 1991.

Did another KirklandSmB & WT101 side-by, same results (WT win), but the Kirkland is gettin' sweeter, just like Old Crow Reserve did, as the bottle empties.
