Bought (and tried) a Russel Reserve Single Barrel & a Weller Antique 107. Both were incredable with the Weller being MUCH smoother than I recall.

Next I think I'll try Mikes concoction. A high proof EWSB would put a smile on my face

had a gravy day at work today. got home and enjoyed a couple pours of the now d/c'ed HHBIB gold label, and finishing up with a ciderboys mad bark cider.

I never could make up my mind about HHBIB gold label. sometimes I like it, sometimes I dont. regardless, for $9 it was a steal. sure, you can still get it, it just wears a white EW label and costs 40% more now, which is still a value these days.

Alls well that ends well my man. HH Gold BIB was always a wee bit rough for me but I think it might've just suffered in comparison to it's stablemates.

I remembered the garage stash, and went out and grabbed one KCSB out of the two cases I bought when the local pharmacy was closing them out at $18 a bottle a couple years ago. I havent had any since then, and rather enjoyed it being every bit as good as I remember it being (like a slightly older Booker's).

then BBQ'ed up some pork steaks with some BBQ/habanero/honey/Old Scout Rye barrel proof concoction.

a good night.....

A sip of Burnheim's Wheat Whiskey (90 proof, 7 years old) enriched with a hearty splash of Maker's Mark Cask Strength (111 proof 4 years old?). Better than either alone.

Yep! First Rate!

First rate indeed. Tried it this weekend ( 50/50 or thereabouts) and it was incredible.

had one lonely pour of Old Scout 8 year barrel proof bourbon sitting there, and had that tonight. I have three more bottles in reserve, from different barrels. This one was good, but could not begin to compare to Booker's (my favorite high proofer). We'll see how the next barrel/bottle goes.

That said, I have come to love their barrel proof 7 and 8 year rye offerings, just as Old Scout announced they were running out of it and it would be unavailable for some time. Ive pretty well cleared the Louisville shelves of it, primarily because only two companies offered MGP barrel proof aged ryes, and the other one thinks its acceptable to charge over $100 a bottle for the same stuff. When it becomes available again, Im betting the stores price it well over $70, and I will sit back with my (relatively) cheap case of it and enjoy it even more

Wise buys Doug, yeah, the Bourbon dollar still stretches pretty far but I'm willing to pay extra if I'm actually getting something extra.

I have found that any inexpensive bourbon can be improved with a skosh of Maker's Mark Cask Strength. Presently though, I am mixing the MM with some Woodford Reserve Master's Collection 1838 Sweet Mash to lower the copper pot induced acridity. I have four bottles of the WRMC and they all need an extra hint of sweetness sometimes, other times not.

a HH night. I rate them:

Henry McKenna BIB at 12 years old > HH 6 year BIB > HH 6 year 90 proof

Man, I wish HH offered a 7-8 year barrel proofer. Id love to compare it to Booker's. Id especially love it if it didnt have the EC profile!

I brought a bottle of 1792 as it is now called, they dropped the 'ridgemont', to a family party. This stuff went over great, the glass bottle is very impressive and the bourbon has a nice rich color. Unusual candied fruit finish made it seem like Baker's with a dessert like quality.

Got it on sale for $23/750ml.

consecutive crap days at work, with today slightly better than wednesday. so, i poured myself a shot of one of my new favorites, SAOS rye 8 year barrel proof, and enjoyed that while contemplating what to do with the next 4 days off.

I finished off the last of a bottle of Old Fitz BiB 1967-1971 today. Whiskey does not get any better than this.
