I do play songs that are played in bluegrass circles but I play what they call "Old Time" which is mostly translated as "Mountain Music". It also incorporates old army marching tunes from 1800s and quebecious folk tunes and the like (at least in new england)

this morning while shoveling snow I brought a bottle of Old Grand-Dad Bib and Benchmark outside. took an hour and change for 5 of us to clear the driveway enough to get cars out. Not sure the bourbon helped.

I wish I could hear "Soldier's Joy". Been a while since I heard it.

I am sipping one of my better vattings tonight. It is made up of 40% Old Grand-Dad 114 proof, 40% Old Fitzgerald 12 YO, 10% '08 Birthday Bourbon, and 10% Irishman cask strength at 112 proof. The uncut proof of this vatting is 102, and I cut that to about 93 proof.............. Man, this some good stuff....... nice barrel flavors from the OGD, some softness from the OF, some complexity from the Birthday boy, and some rounded malt sweetness from the Irishman.

Here, have a sip, you will like it.......... Strange to say, I know, but the greatest interest for my palate comes from the drying/slightly metallic/slightly astringent contribution from the Birthday boy (which is able to hold things together for a long bright finish, even though only 10% of the contents), which casts a layer at the bottom of the mouth and throat. And. let me add, from the Irishman's (also only 10%) round malt sweetness which works a lingering sweetness over the palate.

Mike, you outdone yo own sef with this one!!

I just tried Old Wellers Antique 107. Very strong. Actually numbed my tongue, I think. Great flavor though

Mike,
One time I gathered my open bottles of stagg and wlw. These were stumpies so I poured them all together, figuring I still had a nice blend going. Then, without thinking I dumped some WT single barrel in to fill up the 750. That, I think, was a big mistake. I also get that slight metallic, slight astringency. So I think I ruined this blend with the WT. I still drink it on occasion. I probably should have added another wheater to round it out into a nice 4 grain. Live and learn.

Take 15 ml of Noah's Mill 114.3 proof 15 YO bourbon, 25 ml of Old Fitzgerald 8 YO (Stitzel Weller) 90 proof, and 10 ml of Old Forester '08 Birthday Bourbon 94 proof 12 YO bourbon and what do you have? A really nice and thick bourbon whose tannins and metallic twinge play significantly in the background, but leave the rich sweetness in charge.

This 98 proof bourbon vatting is just great............ a nice orange cast to its thick sweetness......... a dry bite like it was passed over a copper drum only adds to the interest.

Excellent pour!! Just excellent!!

Any person who calls heself or sheself a bourbon drinker who does not have a bottle of OGD BIB hard by his/her hand when it is time for a rip roaring sip, cannot, by my lights, legitimately call heself or sheself a bourbon lover........... that is the truth and nothing but the unwatereddown truth, y'all.

Even if you doon like OGD BIB, you need to keep some on hand and sip same now and agin to remine yoself that mabbe they is still something you ort, in this worl, to larn.

Jest my little $2 worth (inflation, y'all).

'Sevening I be having a nip of Jim Beam Black 86 proof. This is a nice easy sipping bourbon. Won't set the woods on fire, but warn't never intended to.

I am a big fan of 'Baby Saz', which is the younger version (about 6 years old) of Sazerac Rye. It is a first rate whiskey which brings great subtlety and finess to rye whiskey......... lots of fruit, spice, and rye grain sweetness.

Over the last couple of years or so, I have come to appreicate some of our 'craft' distilleries and their products and have often added a mite of their malt whiskies to 'round out' bourbons or rye whiskies with their soft sweetness. I decided to do that with 'Baby Saz' by using 20% of St George Single Malt whiskey. The final sip is about 89 proof and does just what I wanted to do........ the malt adds a little lasting sweetness to the Saz and takes nothing from the Saz strengths........ the fruitiness and the warm spices.

This is a very, very good whiskey. Ima gonna make a nother round....... pull up a cheer and lets talk about when we was young and did foolish things and did not have enough sense to connect consequences with actions. Them was the days!!
