I have found the W.L. Weller Centennial very good lately but more sweet and very little wood, not really subtle. I do find the old BHC I.W. Harper 15yr. 80 proof very subtle with notes of honey and also lite oak, very little spice. This can still be found in our area but I know it has not been made for some time.

Good luck!

I second that. I grab the weller when I want a easy drinker for the night

Give your friend a bottle of Virginia Gentleman 90 proof, and he will kiss you, and bless your house.

I would give a bottle of Makers Mark. Its a solid, safe choice and may lead your friend to develop an interest in Bourbon.

I would agree with Squire. Makers is an excellent choice for a mild bourbon.

I do not see that MM is a "mild" bourbon. There is always a lot of spice in the MM. I would lean towards a wheatear bourbon that is 90-107 proof.

You may even consider Gentleman jack for a nice, mild enjoyable whiskey...

Spun-cookie, I thought Makers was a wheater?
If you don't think Makers is mild what do you consider mild? :?:

yes yes... sorry... I had a different thought process going through my mine. Of the bottles that I have had it always had a little more bite to it... I do not know why that is... I have had a couple very smooth examples, but very rare a far between...

... I should have been more clear...

When I first posted to this one, I got the feeling, err, I assumed (dangerous thing to do) that the need was for a lighter bourbon. And since he was talking about a ~$30-40 bottle, I also thought that was the range he was looking at... makers is an $18-25 bourbon - a very good deal for the price. As a unique gift for something new, MM is not the one I would chose. So I seconded the W.L. Weller Centennial recommendation...

... and for the record, the MM is good. Not one of my favorites, but I will ask for it when I am on an AA flight over everything else they have...

What I like the most about MM is that there seems to be more opinions on that than any other Bourbon... including the WT 101... MM was the first bourbon I started drinking... My w(h)sk(e)y drinking started with a verity of JDs because that is what my father drank. All my buddies are MM drinkers and I am now slowly introducing other bourbons to them...

... so back to your question... if the needs was for a lighter, smoother bourbon than the Birthday Bourbon, I would recommend the W.L. Weller Centennial ...

I may have confused the details with the question on this one... I should reframe from 3-4AM posts... :D

Thank you for clarifying your post. I have not had the birthday or the
Centennial (I have tried to order but have been unable).
As for Makers, it was my first bourbon also. I still enjoy it but consider it
rather easy.

Let me know if you want me to send you a bottle... I can grab one next time I see it... (either). They are both in CA where I travel a lot to at Bevmo (Sac-Arden Way). If you want you can purchases it for store pickup and I will grab them for you and send them on...
