Perhaps

Perhaps one should drink cheap whiskey and imagine its greatness. I am drinking Evan Williams Green Label, and imagine it to be a great whiskey, and so it is.

Old age should burn and rage at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light. - Dylan Thomas

It is a true connoisseur that can drink any whiskey and find the positive attributes and therefore the value and be content! This is something I need to practice more of.

The old saying is all whiskey is good whiskey. There is a bit of truth in this saying. If the whiskey says,"Straight Bourbon" you probably have something that is pretty good.

Eye of the beholder Mike, what counts is you liked it.

You know, I've never learned to do that. I guess I had too much really good bourbon in my life (most of which you can't buy anymore). I got rid of about 350 bottles but I still have over 400. I drank it all in my time, good and not-so-good. Thank God I'm still able to tell the difference.

I'm with Mike since I can't find/afford what is sold as good whiskey anymore. I'm fine with the 45 brands of rye distilled in Indiana that are all ok, old grand dad 100+, wild turkey, even evan williams, which I can get almost anywhere, and a few friends sipping and talking.

In my opinion, not all whiskey is good. I can't drink white dog and I don't like young bourbon. If I don't like something, I won't keep drinking it with the hope of eventually liking it. There are still bourbons out there that are very good and not very expensive. In fact, a few have been mentioned in this thread. as noted previously, it is all a matter of personal taste and opiniom.
