Which are Considered to be the best Wheat Bourbons?

Unread postby johnnyflake » Sun Mar 22, 2015 4:41 pm

I find that I enjoy the wheat style bourbons much more that the typical rye bourbons. I love Makers Mark & the 46. I really love the Weller 10yo that I am working on right now. I am an old guy, been around a long, long time but have not been into bourbons all that much, however, I am now.

How many wheat bourbons are out there and which are considered the best?
Of the best, which are actually available?

The word "best" is an intimidating word. You might like Heaven Hills new Larceny, it's a real nice wheater and goes for a reasonable $22/750ml here. I like it better than Makers. I also like Weller 12y/o and Weller Antique 107. I don't normally spend more than $30 a bottle, but I think these are the best in price range.

Weller 10 year? Had no idea they had one. The Special Reserve and OWA are 7 years. The main Weller is 12 years.

Can you share of photo of the 10 year?

if you are talking about everyday bourbons, i like bernheim wheat whisky (not a bourbon) or weller 107. Of the more expensive ones, parker's heritage 8 was fantastic

I am going to try to post two photos I took. I am very new to the forum and not sure how that's done.

I am told that the 10yo / 100 proof bottling was done in the mid 1990s and discontinued around 2000. It's amazing! I wish I could get more but the two big liquor stores in my area say it's been long gone.

Sorry, but so far I cannot figure out how to attach a photo. If you can explain how to do so, it would be appreciated. My email addy is johnnyflake@yahoo.com

Okay, I did figure it out. Two photos posted.

Weller Centennial. Very nice. Had no idea it was 10 years old.

I have yet to come across a bottle. Hope to one day.

Enjoy it.

In the vein of what you have and the premium wheated Bourbons, I think you may be looking for William Larue Weller, Maker's Mark Cask Strength, or, if you can find any, Pappy Van Winkle in any of its versions. I would guess everyone here would agree that Pappy is the best of the best wheated Bourbon, as it is also the most difficult to find. If you don't want to climb up to those prices, I would suggest Maker's Mark Batch 46 for a somewhat unique, but definitely wheated taste. JMHO
