W.L. Weller special reserve

Unread postby Eggman » Sun Jan 04, 2015 3:15 am

Howdy,

I've been trying to expand my Bourbon horizons a bit lately (I'm temporarily putting Jim Beam White and Black on "hold"). I've discovered that I like Elijah Craig 12 recently and added a new budget Bourbon to my bar: W.L. Weller special reserve. So far it doesn't tickle my fancy. How do you more experienced Bourbon enthusiasts feel about W.L. Weller special reserve?

PS: I bought mine for $18.99+ tax. Also, Sazerac is a company HQd here in Louisiana, so I like that.

My opinion is the WSR is a well priced, decent wheater. So is OWA for a few bucks more.

It's good enough for the money, a smooth easy drink at an honest 90 proof. Comparable to Makers at a much better price. I mostly stay on the rye mash bill side tho. Like the other guy said, Old Weller Antique is better for a few extra bucks. Larceny is a nice enough wheater too.

I like it, especially for the price. I havent been able to find OWA or W12 yet.

I picked up a bottle about two weeks ago for around the same price. To my untrained nose, the alcohol vapor was overwhelming for me. Couldn't pick up on anything else. I plan to give this another try soon as I try more and more bourbons.

Still looking for OWA and Weller 12 as I hear those are a slight step up from special reserve.

Just called my local shop, they finally got some Weller 12 year for $39.99. Ugh!!! He told me he got in just one case and that he had been waiting forever for it. Still better than another local place that is charging $114.99!!!

Guess I'll pick up a bottle or two.

I prefer the WLW12 but the WSR is good too!

My favorite of the line is the OWA but to me the special reserve is as good as makers only at a better price. I like wheaters for a change of pace. I try to keep at least 1 bottle of the OWA on hand for sipping.

Back when WSR was 7 years age stated it was a step above Makers but a more recent bottle seemed somewhat thin and a bit hot. Still a decent example of a wheat style Bourbon and a useful introduction to the genre.
