Yellowstone Bourbon Find/Question

Unread postby kpendle » Tue Feb 06, 2007 11:58 pm

I stopped at a place today to just see what they had and spotted some old 1 Liter 86 proof Yellowstone bottles shoved away on a bottom shelf from the other bourbons. They all had old tax stamps on the bottles. Think I will go back and get at least one for old times sake. This was a popular drink along with Kentucky Tavern when I was growing up outside of Owensboro Ky.

Also did a little researching and saw some things to look at to help determining the age of the bottle. It was pretty inexpesive, $12.99 and it will certainly not go to waste.

Any thoughts on this bourbon? Bourbon shopping in my area is pretty dismal. Only places with any selection of consequence are BEVMO's and the Nugget Markets. Some places have a few other things but certainly not much. Definitely not many finds to be had.

Thanks to all the helpful posts I am certainly learning a lot. Have been lurking a couple of months and slowly building up a stock of different things. Also will be heading back to Ky this summer most likely so I plan to pick up some things that I can't get in Ca.

Bourbon is certainly a great way to connect with home.

The metric Liter doesn't sound encouraging, but the 86 proof does.
Does it say "Bardstown" on the label, or "Louisville"?

If it had tax stamps then it has to be from the old Yellowstone distillery in Louisville and is a pretty good bourbon. At that time, it was the best selling bourbon in Kentucky. I would buy it and drink it.

Like Mike said, if it's "real" Yellowstone from Louisville or even Owensboro, it should be pretty good. However, the modern stuff bottled by Luxco using God-only-knows what for whiskey is some of the worst stuff I have ever had the misfortune to taste.

Ok I picked up the 4 bottles that were there on the way home from work. Attaching some pictures. It is 86 proof.

I have some pictures but can't seem to get them posted.

The tax stamps were completely intact on 3 bottles and one it was peeled off on one side. Minor wear on the labels but they were not dusty. Clean old stuff.

It is
DISTILLED BY
YELLOWSTONE DISTILLERY
LOUISVILLE, KY.

The volume content in the mold of the bottle is:
ONE LITER (33.8 FL OZ.)

Back Label does have a barcode.

On the bottom it has the Ball jar logo so it must be a "Ball" bottle.

I shall open a bottle tonight and give it a try.

With both metric and fluid ounce measurements on the bottle, you can date the bottle to either 1979 or 1980. Those were the transition years for bottle size.
