price to taste ratio

Unread postby OscarV » Thu Mar 23, 2006 6:55 pm

I saw a post in another topic talking abour Woodford Reserve now up to 30 dollars and the taste going down.
Which brings me to this question.
If you were to pick a bourbon with the lowest price-to-hightest taste ratio what would you choose?
For me, Elijah Craig 12 year old at $18.00 is about as good as it gets.
In fact, I would pay a lot more for this.
I hope the good folks at Heaven Hill don't see this.

Oscar,

I'd have to say Very Old Barton 100 Proof is some of the best bourbon you can buy for the money. The 86 and 90 Proof are also excellent.

Agreed on VOB 100 - a great value.

We'll steal Linn's thunder and say it's hard to beat AAA 10 year at $13/liter. Tina is a big fan of EW 1783 @ $10/750ml.

Climbing the price range a bit, I'll throw in the recently discontinued ER 101 10 year, Weller 12 year. Even ER SB 10 year merits consideration in the $20 range, as it could easily pass for $40-50 bourbon.

I no longer buy Elijah Craig 12 year old as I think it is now over-priced. It used to be a good buy at the $12 a bottle price point. I just opt for Evan Williams Single Barrel when it comes to Heaven Hill bourbon.

I like Very Old Barton 90 proof in the big 1.75L jug at something close to $15, but I have to go to Kentucky to get it.

Ancient Ancient Age 10 year old is my everyday pour at $13/L.

If you can find Old Charter 12 year old "Classic 90", buy it! At $15 in Kentucky it is a steal for a truely great bourbon. I have heard that this is no longer being bottled, but do not know for sure. A sad thing if true.

Now that you mention it, Very Old Barton also rates high in this catagory.
I have only had the 90 proof, and can no longer get that in Michigan.
But I will be in KY next month and the 100 proof is on my list.

In my opinion, Elmer T. Lee offers incredible taste / value for the price.

I second the Elmer T. Lee. Bought a bottle after Mike V ordering me one at the Bourbon Bistro on our first visit to Louisville, by the way the city just rocks! Mike is a great host too!

Anyway, bought a bottle last night, think it might be an older one because it didn't have a wax seal on it, just shrink wrap, but what a great bottle for the price!

I would easily pay twice the price w/o thinking about it. Great pick!

VOB is a great value, but for what I can find here (Chicago), Old Fitz prime or BIB is a good value choice.

I'll throw in my vote for any of the Old Charters at least 8 years old. The Weller Anitque 107 for $20 is outstanding. And, of course, Buffalo Trace at $20 is a great value, not that you can get it here in Georgia.

For me, here in California.....Weller Antique 107 is a very good value for a higher proof bourbon. At the $20 price point.
