An opinion that should be contested.

Unread postby Mike » Wed Jul 03, 2013 6:38 pm

The best young bourbon is bourbon with a high rye content............ and, this is very important, a very clean distillate. The rye adds some body and character to the distillate that a young low rye or wheat distillate does not have.

Mere opinion, me lads and lassies, mere opinion.

I like the Four Roses Yellow Label, more so than the Devils Cut, but for the price I paid for the Devils Cut it is pretty tasty.
Cheers!

I would like to test your hypothesis Mike and since you apparently have the stock may I suggest you pour?

Why, of course, Squire, of course. We can start out with comparing some White Dog with some Rye Dog, and it is downhill from there on........ oblivion lies at the bottom of the hill.

I wanted to work the other side for arguement sake, but my favorites are mostly younger bourbons with a rye mash-bill, and higher proof. I think Wild Turkey 101 is the gold standard in this genre. I prefer it to the older Wild Turkey Russel Reserve.

Less rye, young, and 80 proof equals marginal bouron.

Not sure how this fits into the discussion but last year I had the pleasure of trying 3 or 4 of the Willett Family Reserve offerings. Some of them were relatively young (5 or 6 years?) and, I believe, unchillfiltered. They did come in at some really healthy proofs, which I like. I do not know what Willett uses for their mashbill but my taste buds would have guessed maybe a slightly elevated rye content.

So here we have a relatively young, high proof, unchillfiltered whiskey that may or may not have an elevated rye content. All I know was that it was superb!

Cheers,
RG

RG the whisky was not made by Willett rather was sourced from other distillers. The limited reopening of Willett stills has started relatively recently and will not be ready for bottling for years.

Squire, you are exactly right. Willett uses Heaven Hill product.

Mostly Heaven Hill but others as well, or a blend from different makers. Doesn't really matter to me as I won't buy mystery whisky from anyone, especially at a premium markup.

Check the label RG, where the contents were made will tell you a lot.
