Hunting for a sustainable alternative

Unread postby muse » Tue Feb 26, 2013 11:49 am

I have found as I have become a general whiskey fan my personal niche is cask strength bourbon. It makes for a great drink full of flavor and is strong enough it keeps me enjoying a small batch over a long period of time. my favorite is Blanton's straight from the barrel by far. The problem is you can't buy it in this country for some reason and i probably wont be going out of the country until late next year making it quite a stretch for 2/3 of a bottle. Does anyone know any similar tasting alternatives?

p.s. I have tried the regular Blantons you can buy in this country and it does not stand up at all.

I would suggest buying it online. You know you like it, isn't that worth the extra expense of shipping?

Ignore the unhelpful answer from MauiSon, you're looking for alternatives and fair enough.
Could you let us know what country you're in? The reason I ask is that some of the distilleries have suppliers established in other countries throughout the world, and therefore you're not paying import prices.
I for example am in the UK and have found that Buffalo Trace, Bulleit, Eagle Rare and Woodford Reserve are all available at close-to-normal prices because they have UK reseller (actually Sazarac Rye too).

I know you're looking for barrel proof, but this might help us recommend for you, as we'll have an idea of what's available.

So --- where ya from, son?

Wild Turkey Rare Breed. 107-8 proof and an outstanding bourbon.

Since you prefer barrel proof, look for Willett bottles. Also. look for Elijah Craig 12 year barrel proof. If you have not tried it, consider Booker's. It is also barrel proof.

I would second the Rare Breed recomendation. Also look for Baker's and Booker's from Jim Beam (I like Baker's more). Willett also has high quality high proof whiskies.
