Happy Repeal Day [Observed]! Don't forget your celebrations with at least one good drink tonight, toasting the rebirth of american freedom after the oppresive years of prohibition.

Mark, Chris and I had a NY BARDS Chapter meeting (alas by phone) and enjoyed a nice pour of our Buffalo Trace. Happy Repeal Day to everybody! :D

Last night the Louisville BARDS had their celebration. A few people I expected did not make it but we still had a respectable group. Besides myself, Dave Pape, Becky Rice, Julian and Preston Van Winkle, Randy Thompson with his wife Becky and niece Jenn were all at D Marie's to toast Repeal Day and the state of Utah (Being the last state needed for repeal to pass). We toasted using a proper 16yo bourbon - Twisted Spoke. Julian informed Patty, the bartender, that when she ran out of Twisted Spoke, there would be no more. D Maries had that 1/2 bottle and one more in storage.

Besides the Twisted Spoke I drank some Old Fitzgerald Bottled in Bond, and Jim Beam Black. They tried to stump me with two unknown bourbons. The first took two tries but I named it - Bulliett. The Second I named as the 12yo Old Charter but it was the Proprietor's Reserve 13yo Old Charter. I also brought along some 6yo Pot Still Woodford I had - barrel proof and unfiltered. It has a great nose and is not a bad product, but does has a metallic tang to it that I could do without.

Dave and the Van Winkles had to leave at about 7:00 because they had tickets to the 9:30 Seinfeld show at the Palace. The rest of us were entertained when a magician who is working the bars at the Galt House came over and did some card tricks for us. We ended the day at about 8:00.

All in all I would say we had a good Repeal Day Celebration.

Mike

I've never heard of that one before. I assume it's one of Julian's products, so I know I don't have to ask wether it's any good.
I guess you didn't take any tasting notes but would you mind sharing your impressions?

Thanks,

Thomas

Twisted Spoke is a private label that Julian bottled for the Twisted Spoke biker bar in Chicago. It tastes like the 15yo Pappy (or Old Rip Van Winkle) but not quite as good. Julian believes and has convinced me that aging has peeks and valleys with a whiskey that taste good at 10 years old does not tastes as good at 11 but will improve at 12, go downhill for a few years after that before getting better at 15 years and so on. Twtisted Spoke is an example of this. It is a good product, but it has a tannic quality that is not in the 15 yo Pappy that makes it less good than the Pappy.

Thanks
I think I'll spend my pocketmoney on one of Julian's other products

Unless you are a collector, I would agree. I recommend the Pappy 15yo highly as a better choice to drink than Twisted Spoke and I am sure that it would be cheaper.

Well, we spent last night at Marvin & Evelyn's pre-Christmas party, during which Linda was her usual angelic self while your humble reporter (in the company of other bourbon-brains) took on the role of a true Prohibition whiskey imbiber. That is, we drank away and enjoyed a wonderful evening and never gave even the ghost of a thought to National Prohibition!

Marvin and I did, however, give more than a few moments of discussion about how much we appreciate your role in getting our two families together. You were toasted with Bourbon Heritage Old Fitz.

Spending the night with Marvin and Evelyn is a worthy celebration of Repeal Day. We will have to get together and do the same sometime soon.

Mike and John,

Any get together with Marvin and Evelyn is guaranteed to be a good time. Marvin is quite a knowledgeable guy when it comes to discussing bourbons. I've had many great conversations with him about various products.

I wound up seeing 2 bottles of Twisted Spoke at Toddy's in Bardstown during this years Festival. I bought 1; LeNell & Ben got the other. Haven't tried it yet, but one of these days I'll be giving it a go!

As the single member (so far) of a potential BARDS chapter in St Charles MO, I will be celebrating the repeal in the morning at approximately 8AM with a 'morningcap' of Pappy 20 to toast the repeal and good health of the population of the great state of Utah. I had hoped to coincide with the other BARDS chapters on friday but unfortunately broke the first rule of having plans for a weekend night and answered my phone. So instead of drinking to the repeal, I worked 12 hours of overtime. More money, more bourbon!
