Need advice on an impressive bourbon gift

Let me start by saying 'Howdy'. This is my first post, but I am in dire need of some excellent advice.

I need to get a great bottle of bourbon as a gift. A gentleman I know is pretty high up in the ranks at an oil company and was an enormous help in my job search coming out of college. I have just started my job and without him I would probably be making half of what I am now in a job I would hate. Last time I saw him was a couple months ago and he was raving about Pappy Van Winkle 23. He was a scotch man for a long time, but has apparently made the switch to bourbon because of that glass of PVW23. I have spent the last 2 months trying to track down a bottle of PVW23 for him with no luck (I am very wary of purchasing an eBay bottle). I am not quite a bourbon idiot, but I am no expert either. What bottle would I be able to acquire in 4 days that would make an impressive gift for this man? I will honestly consider anything under $500. I am located in Houston, TX. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

As far as my own Bourbon is concerned, I've been sipping on a bottle of Jefferson Presidential Select 18 and Four Roses Single Barrel in between a few scotch favorites.

I cannot believe that you can;t find a Pappy 23 or Pappy 20 in Houston. Send a pm to " doubleblank" and ask him where to find it.

My hunch is that your mentor would not like you to spend that much money on him, after all, he has helped you out of the goodness of his heart.

I suggest something good like Four Roses SIngle Barrel, Woodford Reserve, or Knob Creek Single Barrel. I want to try Maker's 46, but since I haven't, I can't recommend it, but it sound like a good wheater.

I agree with Birdo and would recommend the two bourbons you were sipping on, the Four Roses single barrel or the Jeffersons 17 or 18 year old (both are Stitzel-Weller juice) so you have the connection to the Van Winkle bourbon through that

I appreciate the advice guys. I've picked up a bottle of the Jefferson Presidential Select 18, but will still shoot a pm to doubleblank.

I hope you find it or something else Pappy - even if he wouldn't want you to overspend, he'll appreciate it without doubt, since you already know he was impressed by that bottle. I applaud your appreciative gift!

William L. Weller or George T. Stagg would also be great choices if you want to spend close to $90.00. (and if you can find them)
