Blanton's Original, Rare Breed or Woodford Reserve?

Unread postby MauiSon » Sun May 20, 2012 11:11 pm

Hi, A newbie here. If these were all priced the same (weird pricing, eh?) how would you rank the three for taste and value? I'm going to choose one as my highest priced bourbon purchase (to date) and they all cost $33/750ml. Thanks all!

I just had the Blantons' and found it spectacular. A steal at $33. It doesn't really come across as a high rye formula but the depth is amazing.

I've tried these 3 and would rank them Blanton's, Eagle Rare and Woodford.

I would rank both Blanton's and the Eagle Rare as mighty fine bourbons. I give the Blanton's the nod over the Eagle Rare because I find it a little fuller in taste, and a prettier color (that has to count for something, right?).

WT Rare Breed would be my choice. Wild Turkey makes some great bourbon. Huge flavor and high proof makes this one great.

But, if you can get Blantons for $33, by all means try a bottle of that too. I think it goes for around $45 here in Louisville.

Although I like Woodford, I found it pricey for what it is. It's a little on the delicate side for me.

Blanton's and Rare Breed would be tied for first choice for different reason they are both very good bourbons are are very different from one another. Woodford would be a distant 3rd as a matter of fact I don't buy woodford anymore.

So that price for Blanton's is good, eh? Assuming it's an older bottle (as pricing would suggest), is that good, bad or neutral?

That Blanton's price is great. However, another good bourbon from Buffalo Trace is the Elmer T. Lee; a 14 yr single barrel bottled at 90 proof. I find all the finish on the palette; never making the throat. A nice sipping bourbon - no ice - no water. Can I light my cigar now? We sell it in NJ for 29.99. Elmer still works for the distillery, pushing 90, and still hand picks the barrels.

Excellent choice and a stellar deal on the Blanton's. Please do try both the Woodford and Rare Breed at a later date. Rare Breed is one of my alltime favorites. A little more robust than the other two but quite spectacular for the price.

Cheers,

Thanks, I'm sure I will. I'm focused on amassing a cabinet of good value and discontinued bottles as I work my taste buds up from the bottom shelf. I have an attraction for Wild Turkey as I remember my Grandpa always having a bottle around. I've picked up two WTR101 (before they disappeared here). There isn't a great selection of bourbons on island (Blanton's is the only choice from BT I've seen, 1792RR is the only Barton's and FR doesn't even have distribution here). Latest bourbon buy - Vintage Bourbon 17 ($53+) - SCORE! I'm not likely to get to it anytime soon, but it will be waiting in the bunker. I'll probably pick up some back-ups of the Blanton's 'cause it's the most attractive for gifting (at least that's my rationale for multiples :drunken: ).

At the price you got the Blanton's for, I'd get a case (if you like it of course). It goes for $50 around here. That price on the Vintage Bourbon 17YO is a good one too. My bottle took some getting used to up front, but the last half was awesome.

I've not tried Blanton's, but I intend to. And at that price you made out, it's $50 here in Ohio too.
