Adding Water - What Kind?

Unread postby RandyG » Wed Sep 28, 2011 8:52 pm

I have heard/read numerous recommendations for diluting whiskey and it seems most recommend distilled water (makes sense). What about spring or artesian water? I remember growing up as a kid and taking the trip with my family to a nearby spring and filling up numerous containers from the spring. It was even better than the well at my grandparent's farm. The best water I ever had was in Japan some years back. It was mountain run-off that slowly trickled down the hillsides in bamboo troughs.

The reason I ask is that I have a bottle of 2010 BTAC Handy coming tomorrow and although I like mine neat, the hottest I have on the shelf here is around 105.

What about scotch (I know, this is the bourbon forum)? I generally use ice with scotch and let it sit until the ice is almost gone. Don't know why I do it this way, always have.

Thanks all and cheers,
Mr. G.

Randy

I usually use spring water when I need to add a splash to my bourbon or scotch. Enjoy the Handy! It is great!

Bourbon and branch is bourbon and spring water, so spring water would be appropriate.

Don't let nasty ice ruin your bourbon. This is a big problem. Ice machines often have bacteria and other filth in them that can ruin taste. You might not notice in a Capn & Coke, but it can ruin a fine whiskey on the rocks.

I agree with birdo don't use nasty ice if it can be avoided. I usually use disani to dilute a whiskey if it has to much alcohol presence for my taste.

I use Dasani to make my own ice.
