I just did a review of "Beverages De Luxe" and I mention that it has a recipe for "Poop Fizz". I thought I would copy the recipe here for the curious.

Poop Fizz

Use a large glass.

Three-fourths tablespoonful of Sugar.

One egg - both white and yolk.

One wine glass of Gordon Gin.

The juice of one Lemon.

Fill the glass with fine ice and shake well.

Strain in large glass and add Apollinaris Water.

Sounds like poop to me. Fizz or no.

What a hoot for Christmas...

I'm most curious about the spelling... Did that word have other connotations years ago? Did they pronounce it the same? I mean, really...what were they going for?

Brenda,
According to the 1898 Webster's dictionary at the Filson, "Poop" is either a raised portion of a ship (Poop Deck) or to break wind. You can decide which term is used in this title - I think I will leave it to the individual to decide.

That is absolutely just too bizarre. What the hell were they thinking? I mean, obviously someone thought that sounded like a good name for stuff people were going to drink...

I know I'm bad, but I can't help but envision all kinds of crazy garnishes. Imagine the kebobs you could put together, and the stir-sticks, oh my Gawd...

There are many other recipes in this book. Maybe I will post a few more of them.

Gary,
I saw at least one punch recipe. I also have some other old cocktail books with punch recipes. Would you like me to do a thread of punch recipes so you can have options for making a punch?

Don't want to put you to trouble, Mike, maybe just print one that seems of particular interest, and thanks for that.

And on the cocktail, it is a strange name. The drink itself sounds quite conventional (a gin fizz of which there were variations), but the name is odd.

Gin did have naval associations, so perhaps poop deck was meant (maybe drinks were ceremoniously consumed on that part of the ship).

Just for the record, the recipe is from the Manufacturer's Club of Philadelphia. There could be the nautical connection there...
