Hot Brown Throwdown

Unread postby brendaj » Thu Jul 19, 2007 8:37 pm

Hey Folks,
Sorry to be mentioning this at the last minute, but Bobby Flay has done one of his 'throwdowns' featuring the Kentucky Hot Brown. It is airing as I type this...

Chef John Castro, Executive Chef of Winston's Restaurant (Winston's is the flagship of Louisville's Sullivan University). John Castro is Joe Castro's brother. Until a couple of months ago, Joe Castro was the Executive Chef for the Brown Hotel http://www.brownhotel.com/dining/index.html...which is the home of the Hot Brown. (he was replaced by Chef Laurent Géroli, I promise to go try his food and give you an update)

John Castro is known for his Not Brown, which involves fried green tomatoes and seafood.

The show is on as I type this. It will air again on the Food Channel at 3:30am tomorrow, 11pm on Sunday and 2:00am Monday.

It will be worth watching I'm sure,
Bj
As a Kentuckian, I consider it my civic duty to drink Bourbon, smoke and bet the ponies. Its a tuff job, but someone has to do it...

I find Bobby Flay insipid and "Throwdown" is the epitome of his asshole oeuvre. The whole idea of him running around, ambushing people in order to, supposedly, out-do them at their specialty is offensive. What's next? "Bobby Flay Mocks Orphans"?

I also found the show disturbing. The one I saw, he took on some poor guy in Vegas, who is some sort of "mixologist", opening his new club and showing off a new signature drink in front of the media and his friends.

Bobby walks in and beats him at his own game.

What do you say to someone like that? "Thanks for dropping in"?

So there are episodes where Flay does win? I have seen a few of these 'throwdown' episodes and in the one's I have seen he always lost. I kinda figured they made it like that because it would be lame to have the supposed 'experts' in their fields getting beat by him.

Anyways, just because I loved the hot brown I had in Louisville SO damned much I think I'll watch the episode just to pretend i have smeel-o-vision!

I saw the show and it wasn't too awful, considering how I feel about Flay. The Castro brothers came across well. The way some of the assembled multitudes seemed to be peeing themselves from excitement was disturbing.

I've probably had the hot brown at Kunz's more than anywhere else. I swear there is a little beef stock or something in the sauce, though I've never seen a recipe call for that.

It was also fun to see Robin Garr and, briefly, Chris Morris.

I would have thought the "results" were of little interest, but since you asked, the Castro brothers won in a "photo finish."

Please don't watch the show on my account.
