I am hoping others will try this juice and tell me it was the Bird's bottle, but OscarV tried his and the results were nearly the same...

Thank you Jeff for adding this one... I wish Old Forester would not have :D

I have not purchased a bottle yet, but I have had it. I found it very good with a lot of spice notes with oak on the nose and the taste was very rich caramel and spice. Is it possible you got a bad bottle? that happens from time to time and the plasitc smell may be from some failure to clean the lines. If the bottle is that bad, you may want to send it back to Brown-Forman for analysis.

I pick up my 2 bottles today. My local store called and said they have arrived. I will report back if I got a good batch or not.

Ok the results are in and the bottle I opened is nothing short of SUPERB. Big beautiful nose, brown sugar sweet and floral. Very refined taste with tons of flavor. The finish is long and memorable.

My first impression was WT Kentucky Spirit.

This blows the doors off the 2003 OFBB I have open.

Sorry Emerald but I think you got ripped off, Hey next time why don't you consult the board first and see if anyone else has had a bad bottle and then post a review.

You may have turned alot of people off to this wonderful bourbon with such a negative first review. I saw alot of people say, "Well I'm glad I passed on that one."

I call them as I see them. The problem I see is that 3-4 others that had the same reaction... We all have different tastes..

I am glad yours bottle agree with you... Call them as you see them... And we will have a full body of reviews to choose from.

Well the thing I'm saying is one of the 3-4 others who have had the same experience is who you got the sample from.

I think in order to be fair you need to go buy your own bottle and do a review and not rely on a sample from someone elses bottle that you knew was bad.

No offense was meant. You said you were hoping someone would give you a good talkin too about your review. It just happened to be me instead of Mr. Cowdery. :D

Thanks Dan... I now have two to choose from and yours is better, but not my cup of tea:

Scott’s
Nose – very young. Lots of off notes. As it opens some of the earth from Dan’s is there, but not near as much. There is a lot of corn with some wet plant smell (like house plants).

Dan’s
Nose - Not as young with a lot more depth. The young corn is covered nicely with some oak and earth. I get some touches of the chocolate that has been mentioned on this as it opens. There is some rye and some other spices.

Overall Nose:
Here is what is odd. If you let the two sit in the glass a while, Dan’s has more depth. Fruits (apples and pears are there), Scott’s is very one dimensional, but you do get some vanilla with the plastic diaper. If you swirl them and then smell… they are very very close.

Day’s is better, but you have to let it sit a min and then go at it…

Scott’s
Taste: - Sour apple to start with. Almost like those damn everlasting chewy candies… lots of tart, bitter apple. Dan’s is sour, this is bitter.

Dan’s
Taste – Good at first sip, then as it sits on the pallet there is a lot of sour apple. There is some earth here I do not get in Scott’s. It is definitely better, but not a juice I look forward to.

Overall Taste:
Because I was concerned about a potential bias, I let me why as these. I did not tell her they were the same of juice I did not care for. She helped nail the Sour verses bitter.

Scott’s
Finish -
Much like the taste with a touch of earth before the youth hits ya…

Dan’s
Finish – Bite and then sour and then some wet earth that lingers for a while before a medicinal alcohol flavor runs the others into the ground.

Overall – Overall
This bourbon is thin and one dimensional to me. I really have to let it sit in the glass to collect anything to get my teeth into and then the good parts last so shortly that you can miss them with the strong sour/bitter notes. The medicinal alcohol flavors are there in both and you never know which sip is going to kick you in the head with it. I would call this a full range bourbon with mystery at every turn, but it never floats into good or great flavors… really just OK to pour to not good at all and it lives in the other two areas for me.

I am sorry Em, but I think you either you got a bad bottle or the bottles here in Louisville are superior to those out of state. I find this bourbon good and interesting. Maybe not as deep as last years with its layer of rich fuit flavors, but it is still very good with lots of spice and wood tones and a hint of apple fruit on the end of the finish that I rather like.

there is always variation withina botteling line... I did not get green apples, but sour apples in Don's and strong at that.

I am glad your bottle is better... I may have to stop by one day and pour a sip or two...

Come on by. By the way it is more of a ripe apple than green apple or sour apple on the finish.

I just got fruit flavors. My pallet is not as sophisticated and probably couldn't discern types of fruit as well. But I can definetly tell the difference in sour fruits and I did not get any sour notes.

Sorry Em, but I have had samples from about six different bottles now and they all lead me to believe you had samples that were not right in some way - either contaminated in the bottling process or in the sample bottle sent you. As a matter of fact I am beginning to like this bourbon even more. It does benefit from breathing and I think it is best drunk in a brandy snifter with lots of air space for the bourbon. Someone said it was a "one diminsional bourbon" but boy are they wrong. A little breathing time makes this bourbon open up and unveils layers of complexity. Who ever said that did not spend enough time with this bourbon.

Well, it happens, but not often. I have not tasted any from KY, just IN and TX. If you get a chance, would you send me 50 ml of yours? I usually find all of the items you get out of the juice and with a glass and crystal Glencairn (limited to the samples I have had), I have been skewed from your notes in the "bitter" direction.

I find the items, but they are secondary or tertiary to the alc and sour apple that dominated the taste and finish.

I have been looking for a bourbon that is best in a brandy snifer to drive home the point of glassware with bourbon to the non believers and this might be it.

Em,
I will do you one better - I happen to have two open bottles right now and I will get you a sample of each.
