a.h. hirsch bourbon 16 year

Unread postby codycarlone » Sat Dec 18, 2010 10:42 pm

I found a bottle of the a.h. hirsch bourbon 16 year, but at closer inspection it looked like the bottle wasn't completely filled. I found it at a specialty Wine/Liquor store and the person showing me the bottle noticed the same thing. It looked like it was missing about a shot worth.
The wrapping/packaging around the top looked fine....it didn't look like it had been tampered with. It looked in great condition except for it didn't look completely full.
Has anyone ever seen this before in the a.h. hirsch bourbon 16 year? The clerk wasn't even going to take 10% off, but I didn't want to take the chance.
Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Never saw a low fill level in any Hirsch 16, although it's bound to happen, the longer you keep it.

Thanks Joe.
I'm hesitant to buy it because of this reason. It's $195, plus they offered me the 10% off. I found 3 more bottles...one for $285, and two at the same location for $325. I was actually thinking of this as an investment, so I'm not sure if the bottle that looks like it's not filled completely would be worth it.
Do you think the hirsch 16 is going to keep going up in price, or level out here around $300? I'm new to bourbons (more of a scotch drinker), so I'm not sure where it's going.
Thanks

Well look what happened to rare scotch. Rare bourbon will do the same IMO.

I agree. As much as people scream that AH Hirsch 16yr Gold Foil isn't worth $300, the fact of the matter is they ain't making any more Michter's. Or S-W for that matter. It's like Port Ellen scotch, the price won't start falling.

Whiskey is foolish as an investment because it is so difficult to re-sell.

Chuck,
Not sure. With the overseas auctions getting stronger, it may mot be a bad idea for the long run. I would not be surprised to see auction houses for Whiskey much like wine in the next 10 yrs or less. Anything the gov can get taxes out of, they will make leagal :)

To call something an "investment" it needs to be based on more than a wish and a prayer. What you describe is more like a long shot wager.

Collecting old whiskey is more than a wish and a prayer IMO. I could sell my collection on E-Bay right now for 5 times what I paid for it just 5 to 7 years ago. I think it's a great investment just like old wines, except wine will eventually go over the hill where whiskey won't. To me, a bottle of old bourbon is like a gold bar.

Okay, I'll say it. The biggest problem with whiskey as an investment is that it involves participation in criminal activity. There is no legal way to invest in whiskey because there is no legal way to liquidate your investment.

Pretty funny. The investment is liquid but it can't be liquidated.

Chuck- I'm not sure how buying something on the open market and reselling it at a price someone is willing to pay for it could be considered "criminal activity." I'm curious as to your reasoning.

Sounds like a simple case of supply and demand to me.

I agree with you that it may not be the most sound of investments (in the traditional sense) as public perception of the Hirsch 16 may dwindle to nothing (not saying it will by any means), but many things increase in value over time by virtue of it's rarity. I don't necessarily see anything different in this instance.

Cheers.

Selling Alcohol without a liquor license is illegal, thus a "criminal activity".

I realized how my post could be misunderstood after I posted it. That is true.

I own a liquor store and was thinking in those terms.

Cheers
