James Walsh Bottle

Unread postby ladyphenom7 » Wed Nov 17, 2010 6:00 pm

I came across this empty bottle at a thrift shop and would like any information on it.
The label reads
James Walsh Blended Whiskey
The imprint on the bottom is
D388 70 A (The A is in a circle) 51
39
It is a clear pint bottle and there is also a South Carolina Liquor Tax 34 cents stamp on the front (if that helps)
Anyone know what year this bottle may be from or what it's worth?

Based on that set of numbers I would guess 1951. I doubt that there was a whopping 34 cents state tax in 1939. Just a guess. The only value would be to a bottle collector and I would guess that bottle would not bring very much, but I am not a bottle collector.

If it is from 1951, it's interesting to see the Walsh name in use at such a late date. James Walsh and Company was a major Cincinnati-based liquor concern pre-Prohibition. The company attempted to come back after Prohibition but doesn't appear to have been very successful. I guessed that it folded during WWII because I've never seen anything about it from later than that. That said, it's only interesting to the geekiest of geeks, like me.

Doubtful. Spirits do not improve in the bottle, so it won't taste any better today than in did in 1951. It might, however, taste better than a modern blend, which has become a pretty debased form. On the other hand, 1951 was a very good year (the year of my birth).
