Old Forester Personalized

Unread postby myone2 » Thu Dec 27, 2007 4:07 pm

I acquired a boxed bottle of 100 proof Personalized Old Forester. I have been reading your interesting forum and would like to know the approximate age of my sealed, full bottle. The paper label is stamped with the code JC 107910 in red and DSP Kentucky 414. At the bottom of the label are the numbers 8-75. On the bottom are raised numbers D-10 and 65-62. Not being a collector, I would appreciate your help.

Is your bottle a fifth or a 750 ml? That will help tell old it is. If it is a fifth then there should be a green tax stamp with the dates the bourbon was made and bottled. If it is a 750 then it from the 1980's or younger. Then you need to see what kind of warning labels are on the bottle. These labels are from the mid to late 1980's.

Qt

Unread postby myone2 » Thu Dec 27, 2007 6:22 pm

The bottle is 4/5th Qt and does have a green tax stamp, however, I cannot read the date on it. There is a red stamp which may be 1956, but it is quite blurred.
Your quick reply is appreciated.
Thank You

Can you post a photograph of the bottle? That would be helpfull in placing a date on the whiskey.

I have seen these bottles before. They were a promotional bottling done in the late 1950's, maybe the early 1960's as well. The whiskey was basically a single barrel whiskey bottled for this brand, whith the bottles personalized by adding a label with the purchaser's name. The bourbon is excellent - very fruity and with rich caramel and spice tones.

I went and dug out my bottle of "personalized" Old Forester. The bottle shape is similar if not identical to yours. "Personalized" is stenciled diagonally across the front label. The tax strip is intact and states "Made Fall 1940......Bottled Fall 1945". Distilled by Brown Forman registered distillery 414....bottled at bonded warehouse no. 50.

Interestingly, I have a bottle of Labrot & Graham in a similar but not identical bottle. Spring 1954.....Spring 1962. Distilled at reg dist no. 52.....bottled at DSP-KY-414.

I too have the exact same bottle. The green tax stamp on mine is in perfect condition and reads "Spring 1952, Fall 1959"

I have some evaporation so I hope the whiskey is still good....we'll soon see.

Randy, mine has the same info on my label....DSP 414 Warehouse 50.

OK! Now that you mentioned Spring, I could make that out on the green stamp, along with the date 1956. A big help. This bottle probably has some evaporization also. The liquid is just above the top of the label. Thanks for the info.

A fellow enthusiast brought his bottle of OF to a tasting I hosted last year. I remember it being exceptional (even with the evaporation he had) and if memory serves, some fruit notes on the palate.

There is no way that an empty bottle is worth $300. Maybe $30.

Gideon if I were interested in collecting Bourbon memorabilia I would forgo bottles and buy framed labels or ads instead. The bottle of that period has no more value than recycled glass, it's the label on it that draws attention.
