Should I buy?

Unread postby BourbonDrinker » Tue Jul 10, 2007 7:51 pm

I found someone nearby that has a few old bottles of whiskey...

These bottles are all unopened.

He is offering to sell them to me... Two questions for you: 1) Are any of these older bourbons worth my time... 2) What would you offer for any of these bottles if you were buying?

1. Beam's Choice Collector's Edition Volume IV- 4/5 quart aged 8 years 90 proof Straight Bourbon Whiskey. From around 1969 I believe. Comes with box which is in alright shape.

2. Kessler American Blended Whiskey- 500 ml 80 proof. Seems pretty old.

3. Old Quaker Straight Bourbon Whiskey- 500 ml 86 proof. Aged 6 years. From 60s (has the federal law forbids sale or re-use of the bottle
I think these are all around 1970 or earlier. Please respond soon and let me know!

Piffft!

Old Quaker State - Hey isn't that motor oil??? 10W30??? Looks like something inexpensive for the European market or just a straight counterfeit of some kind. Never heard of it.

Spend your money on Mobil1. Your engine will thank you.

Beam's Choice is just an activated charcoal filtered Jack Daniels wannabe. I'd say it's worth ..oh...half of fifty cents.

Do you read about folks searching for 1960's or 1970's bottles of Beam's Choice? No You Don't. Now that tells you something, doesn't it?

Kessler's is so BAD it will turn your teeth black just looking at the label!

Better make an appointment with One Cube Only for a cleaning!

And Yes I am being kind. I could say worse. But I won't.

New domestic policy!

I would get the Old Quaker for the heck of it just to see what it tastes like. Can't be too expensive. Pass on the other two...

Old Quaker in a Schenley product from Lawrenceburg Indiana and not a bad bourbon. I would get it if they are not asking too much for it. The Beam bourbon is OK - about the same quality as Jim Beam Black which I rather like myself. I would get it. If they throw the Kesslers in for free you might want to take it home. It is always good to have a blended whiskey around for comparison to real bourbon.

What would you offer for these bottles? Each by themself and as a group? I don't think the guy selling these has any idea what to charge.

I would probably offer the owner $40.00 for all three bottles since the Old Quaker appears to be 500 ml and the Kesslers is not something I am particularly interested in - $25.00 for the Beam, $10.00 for the Old Quaker and $5.00 for the Kesslers. That is my breakdown on those bottles. I might go as high as $15.00 for the Old Quaker, but then I would pass on the Kesslers.
