hi,
i'm new to this board and a budding bourbon enthusiast! does anybody have any info on this bottle of bourbon i just purchased at an estate sale? i'm trying to figure out if it's any good or not before i open it. i think it was made especially for Perino's restaurant here in los angeles which is no longer in business. hoffman distilling co. lawrenceburg and bottled by trojan distillers are both listed on the label. any info would be greatly appreciated!
thanks,
-alan

Alan,

Like you I'm also a budding bourbon lover. I did a search for Hoffman Distillery and came up with a couple of interesting facts.

Old Commonwealth Distillery
Region: USA, Kentucky
Address: 2021 Glensboro Road, Lawrenceburg, KY 40342
Owner: J.P. Van Winkle and Son
Founded: 1880
Founder: S. O. Hackley
Phone: +1 502 839 6944
Fax:
Status: Closed after 1979
Homepage:
Email:
Visits:
Notes: Also known as The Hoffman Distilling Co.
The distillery was closed during prohibition.
Used as bottling facility for J.P. Van Winkle 1983 - 2002.

Mike Veach, one of the residet historians, also has some information posted in the bourbon lore section of this board dealing with the Medley Destilling Company that mentions Hoffman.

o - The Hoffman Distilling Company of Lawrenceburg, Ky.
with a capacity of 300 bushels per day is listed with
Ezra Brooks as one of its four brands. The executives
of the distillery are Ben G, Ripy, William R. Ripy, and
Robert Ripy (1966 Red Book, p.33).

There is also some discussion about the whiskys made some time ago being better than what is offered today.

I would also add that anything that has the Van Winkle name tied to it would more than likely be superb whisky.

You really only can tell by opening it and giving it a taste. On second thought it is probably realy bad rot gut whisky. Send it to me and I will dispose of it for you.

Search the board; the folks here are Great and their knowledge is without peer

Happy sippin

Please all, continue this discussion in Alan's original post which can be found here in the bourbon straight forum. No need for 2 threads dealing with the exact same topic. Thanks
