Not sure I have five but in order ...

Lagavulin 16
Glenlivet French Oak Reserve
Highland Park 12
The Singleton

I liked the Glenlivet 18 but I don't believe it is really worth full price ($78 here).
The Balvenie single barrel 15 year - Okay, nothing wrong with it but it doesn't stand out. Might buy it again.
Dalwhinnie 15 year- Kind of generic, didn't hate it but didn't particularly enjoy it either. Tasted a bit young.
Glenfiddich 12 - Not impressed.
Johnnie Walker Green, not bad but a bit overpriced at $55

Hi there... new to this site, although I've been lurking in the shadows for a bit.
Big fan of bourbons although I actually broke into the spirit world (ha ha) through Scotch.
5 faves are probably...
Lagavulin 16
Ardbeg 10
Talisker 10
Glenlivet Nadurra (cask strength)
Johnnie Walker Black

You may have guessed I'm a big Islay fan, but I'm coming around. The bourbon is helping :)

Benromach
Glenlivet Nadurra,
Aberlour A'bunadh
Tullibardine PX and the Portwood
Some Coal Ila's (fruitier)

I'm more a fan of the cask strenght speyside versions and those with a slight use of peat instead of the strong peated scotches.
Then i only taste peat. hard for me the tell variations. So if i have 1 Ardbeg or Laphroigh, i tasted them all. That goes for me, can't speak for others.

i'd like to put a bottle of scotch on a table at my wedding where I believe a few scotch drinkers will be sitting. i'm looking for a recommendation within the $40-$60 range. i've heard the following is good:

Aberlour a’bunadh
Talisker 10 yr
Macallan Cask Strength / 12 yr / 18 yr
Laphroaig Quarter Cask
Balvenie Doublewood / 15 yr single barrel / Portwood

what's my best bet?

also...since i'm not a scotch drinker myself...is putting a $40 bottle of scotch at a table of (high end) scotch drinkers akin to giving bud light to a beer lover?

That's a good list of whiskies. Not knowing the taste of your scotch drinkers, it is hard to say what they might prefer. I would go with the Aberlour and the Talisker. Those would satisfy a diverse range of tastes. If you know for sure that your scotch drinkers like Islay whisky... the Laphroaig Quarter Cask, for sure.

As far as putting a $40.00 bottle at a table of high end drinkers... not a problem. Scotch is no different than Bourbon, in so far as expense doesn't necessarily translate to quality.

I have only tried The Glenlivet 12 year old, not really crazy about it, it is ok, not sure it is truly representative of good Scotch Whisky. Looking for somewthing else to try. Some of my friends say Highland Park is good.

For Islay, Talisker and Ardbeg are my favorites! Not for a beginner Scotch drinker but if you're seasoned and used to scotch, these are excellent choices..

Bruichladdich is great too…. So is Balvenie.. not Islay Scotches but great in their own categories….

For blended scotch, of course 18-year old Johnnie and the ever so-popular Blue! Also, Johnnie Double Black is great too since it finally came out in full force! Can't beat that! Great tasting scotch, especially with a favorite cigar to boot as well as Chivas 18 and Royal Salute!

Also, Pinch is a good everyday scotch!

Too many to list but everyone has their own favorites…… Depending upon the mood and what someone prefers, there are many choices from the light to the harsh!

Trivial, probably, but Talisker is not an Islay whisky. It is an island whisky from the Isle of Skye. Talisker is the only distillery on the Isle of Skye.

Ardbeg Airigh Nam Beist (Absolute favorite, but no longer available)
Lagavulin 16
Ardbeg Corryvreckan (Have a hard time finding this one anymore as well)
Laphroaig 18
Glenlivet Nadurra

A fantastic scotch that I had the pleasure of trying that would come close if it weren't for the price is Caol Ila 25.

I too will stick to the affordable and more available choices.

1. Talisker 10
2. Highland Park 12
3. Johnnie Walker Black (the best of the blends, and better than many singles)
4. Glenfarclas
5. Springbank
