Buying a gift

Unread postby ghrb330 » Mon Nov 23, 2015 6:06 pm

I know absolutely nothing about Scotch, but was wanting to buy a nice bottle for a friend of mine as a gift. I'm in the US and have a budget of around $500.00. I was looking at the 21 year old Dalmore, (the bottle was nice!) but I didn't know if some of those brands you're more buying the name or the drink. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

A little additional info. he's regularly drinks blended (mixed?) whiskey, but has talked about liking a single malt much more. He says the stuff he regularly drinks is crap.

With that budget you have many choices. I would ask which single malt(s) he prefers and go from there. Give me a brand or type (Highland, Lowland, Speyside, Island) and I'll be glad to make some specific recommendations.
